I can completely understand when a US poker player uses a VPN in order to play on PokerStars while still being in the US. As long as that player is using a quality VPN with their normal account the odds on being geolocated are very small. But at least everyone knows who they are playing against.
It is sad that so many US players had to relocate primarily to Canada or Mexico to make a living online. It is even more ridiculous that a US on-line player has to leave the country to play SCOOP. However, with quality VPNs a US player still present in the US is not breaking any US law. Granted that player is violating the PS terms of service and UK law. But if the player is multi accounting they are breaking the same UK law ass if using a VPN in the US so why couldn't Hastings just used his normal account and the VPN from the US?
