They are derided by scientists everywhere for lack of accuracy and consistency. Many judges won't allow polygraphs as a form of evidence (either defense or prosecution). I think some states in the USA still use them though but it's not based on any scientific rigour.

Yeah, though they may not be accurate enough for the court of law, that doesn't mean they aren't useful and overall quite accurate. The FBI, CIA, and other USA government agencies use them for their hiring process. I would guess that other countries also use them for their government agencies.

Different "populations" test differently with polygraphs. Read up on them and you'll find them to be of questionable validity.
