So I've heard a lot of people go busto gambling but I'm not sure the percent from poker. I feel that poker, you are in control so much that it is hard to bust if you follow the rules, IE: bankroll management, etc. Some people will be bored of poker but there are many that will be consumed by it and it's hard to know how every person reacts to it. My friend who is an addict to everything that is socially considered bad rubs poker off like it's nothing but I introduced online poker to my mom. I know my mom does like to go gambling as she goes to the Borgata with my sisters', their bfs and I and she is a winning black jack gambler even though it's not a hard game to catch on with slight house edge.

Given that knowledge, I still want to show my mom how to play poker and I want to teach her to play at the level I am or higher(I started cash games 10 days ago at .01/.02NL and now am 8 tabling 25NL). She was a successful business owner but the economy turned that upside down and now she works in bad conditions for a small amount of pay 7 days a week. She is nearing 50 and has never touched a computer so 4 hours ago, I taught her how to use a mouse and how to it's all you need to play poker. I taught her basics for an hour than I had to go meet some people n sister to go watch the UFC fight. I come back 3 hours later and my mom is still 1 tabling .01/.02 NL lol. She and I do have an addictive personality which also benefits us in this situation as long as we're winning players. She isn't a winning player.. yet. She has been an observer and learned the game through just watching tv but she doesn't know any concepts like Outs etc. I have yet to teach her.

I got my quick learning curve from her and I've been only playing for 6 months(5.5 months of SNGs) and have been winning after the first month so I figure I can teach her even faster.

Am I doing the right thing and trying to help her improve her quality of life or am I possibly getting a person into the scary world of poker where most fail and ruin their lives. I have 2 sisters and they are night and day, one of my sister's bf paid all of college from poker and the other sister who is in the medical/dental field has a friend who won a tourney and got paid $28k but he also supposedly busted it, I don't know how that's possible..

well obviously your mom isn't a winning black jack player, if she is, i advice her to hit the tables right away. why learn poker strategy when your mom already has an unbeatable system at blackjack ?!!?!?

i dunno. but u say she has an addictive personality. lol. poker. lol.

i mean. This could become epic but im more scared for ur mom than I am a believer, yet. It would be truly awesome tho if she started to win 1/2 holdems for like 2Ks a week.

and to otis nixon: shove a curve somewhere.

IMO SSNL can be profitable for anyone who
a) is not a moron
b) has good emotional control

Probably 80% of the population aren't morons
Less than 10% have the requesite emotional control, IMO

I have two points to make on this topic that we have chosen to discuss:

1) I have never met a gambler who told me he's a loosing player at blackjack

2) I have a very strong feeling I'm being leveled here

Lol @ trashing the OP. It's like every time I open a post on 2+2, there is nothing but negative comments. I think it's an interesting situation. If your mom isn't happy at work, poker may be a new, and exciting way to make money. But it would obv take a long time to teach her the game, and I don't think she should quit working at this point and start grinding 0,01/0,02 NL, to put it that way. Use some Sundays to see if she has some talent, and teach her the game properly. And take it from there.
