I don't get that logic. If you are 100% to get screwed if you aren't getting paid by a guy, then all you do is enabling him to scam more. You either think guy is generally to be trusted but something went wrong, but he wants to make good without conditions because it's the right thing to do.
Or you do not. That's at least bordering to a conscious decision to help him keeping up the illusion of trustworthiness.
How much of the $3000 you received was scammed from other people, and how much more did he take since then?
If people that got scammed because you didn't want to risk your money demanded a refund, would you say that they were completely unreasonable?
