Can we confirm that any of the info is accurate? Mostly thinking in terms of the timeline stated, the vehicle info, etc. It seems there are a fair number of 2+2ers in the Reno or Northern California area who can at least keep their collective ears to the ground.
Hell, a couple of my friends went camping near Tahoe that week (okay, one Tahoe, one at Loon Lake). They're really not the types who would notice or remember some random person while on a family vacation, but it can't hurt to ask.
