Today Bodog Brand announced that they will allow their current license agreement with Morris Mohawk Gaming to expire at the end of 2011, thus the Bodog Brand will leave the US online gaming market.

The news comes on the heels of Bodog UK being granted a gambling licence by the UK gambling commission.

Bodog Brand has released the following statement about their decision to let their brand licensing deal with Morris Mohawk Gaming expire at the end of the year.

“Following recent news that Bodog UK has been granted a gambling license by the UK Gambling Commission, we are pleased to announce further developments to the Bodog brand going forward.

As highlighted last week, Bodog UK’s CEO, Patrik Selin believes the trust and credibility that having a UK license brings to the brand will benefit customers and allow him to attract the best talent in the industry to work with him.

However, in order to ensure the brand’s expansion is not affected by negative perceptions, both in the UK and elsewhere in emerging markets such as Asia, where Bodog88 is already successful, a decision has been made to withdraw the Bodog brand from the US market at the end of 2011. As a result, the Morris Mohawk Gaming Group’s (MMGG) brand licensing agreement will be allowed to expire on 31 December, following which US residents will no longer be able to access bodog.eu or any other Bodog branded website. We understand that MMGG will launch under its own brand in 2012, licensed by the Kahnawake Gaming Commission.

Sounds like UB owners will join forces with MMGG and be back in the game next year. Scott Tom never, never will leave us alone.

Rebrand and bailout are two different animals. The Bodog brand has made some serious headway in Asia and Europe and a rebrand in the states protects that should things go sour here.

Can't really say to much negative about them. I think their lines were a little one sided for a long time but of course nobody forced me to bet with them. Overall they handled any issues with me professionally.

Feels like something shady to me. There aren't enough players now as it is, will the sites share player pools?

I don't like it, I'm withdrawing the meager funds I have on there.

Quite the opposite. They have a UK license and plan on opening up high street betting shops there. They are expanding.

I think he means for US poker players if Bodog splits. If the ROW can still play poker Bodog but US players are forced to play on a different site will they combine the player pools or will the US facing poker room be for US only.

If its USA only then it will suck as there aren't poker players on Bodog as it is now.

Canadians were not allowed to play on Bodog up until a couple of years ago I believe.

I don't see why this would affect Canadian players.

From the article it sound like MMGG will offer current Bodog players the option to switch but I think I'll withdraw entirely near the end of the year, just in case. Sucks too! I was starting to build up a small roll on that site! Anyone know another place US players can still access without government interference? Is Cake fairly safe?

Not sure why Canadians would be affected by this. We share their media, not their laws.

So basically we have an option to switch to this new site but who knows what that will be like?

I guess who really can blame them for wanting to protect where they are licensed at and kudos to them for giving us 5 months notice which never happens in this industry.

From a large Bodog affiliate:

Bodog just received their UK license which is a very big deal for them and very expensive. They also just bought advertising on an English Premier team....also a very big investment. Bodog wants to be a global brand and get more deals done.

It's very difficult for Bodog to be under attack in the US and still be on the front of Lionel Messi's jersey. There will be a new url but will be the same software, CS, mgt.

It will mean the end of the Bodog era in the US but Morris Mohawk Gaming has been operating the brand in the US Market for the past 5 years so other than a name change it should be business as usual for US punters.
So, it will just be called something else?

Isn't Merge a network of different sites using the same software? Doesn't that break up the player base a bit or am I not fully understanding how it works?

it was my belief that its the opposite. a bunch of smaller sites all funneling players into one pool to make it as big as possible. no?
