Just noticed it was started the day after black Friday. No wonder I laughed, I was probably drunk.

It's incredible that Bitcoin was trading at around $1 when this thread was created. But of course, everyone's a genius in hindsight...

Looking at Coinbase the fee per transaction is 1.49%. Is this typical for crypto? That's brutally high compared to trading fees for regular stocks.

If your going to be trading use GDAX, no fee limit orders and market orders from 0.1%-0.3%

Coinbase is generally used to convert your usd to btc before moving it to an exchange for trading or your personal wallet for hodling. (I think anyways im canadian so using different sites)

So what advantages does Coinbase offer over GDAX to justify its huge fees? Orders are a lot more simple to do and more easily filled?

It's a beginner oriented exchange. You simply put the amount of dollars you want to spend, and it gives you the BTC. Unlike more complicated exchanges where you can set a limit order and it may not get filled, or a market buy, etc

They are trading at a ridiculous 70 cents USD which is hilarious for a currency that no one uses.

Funny post back in 2011...only up 800000% since then.

I have no idea whether it's a bubble or not. What makes bitcoin any different than rare stamps or coins - which are everyday items that are valuable only due to scarcity and the faith of those who collect them?

But I get a good kick out of reading about the guy who bought a pizza back in 2010:

"I'll pay 10,000 bitcoins for a couple of pizzas.. like maybe 2 large ones so I have some left over for the next day. I like having left over pizza to nibble on later. You can make the pizza yourself and bring it to my house or order it for me from a delivery place, but what I'm aiming for is getting food delivered in exchange for bitcoins where I don't have to order or prepare it myself, kind of like ordering a 'breakfast platter' at a hotel or something, they just bring you something to eat and you're happy!

"I like things like onions, peppers, sausage, mushrooms, tomatoes, pepperoni, etc.. just standard stuff no weird fish topping or anything like that. I also like regular cheese pizzas which may be cheaper to prepare or otherwise acquire.

"If you're interested please let me know and we can work out a deal."

Right now we're talking about two $30 million dollar pizzas!

What's really gunna twist your noodle is:

"Would bitcoin be worth what it is today if this man never proved that people will exchange real world goods for them?"

Bitcoins isn't the answer. "Bitcoins?" is the question. "Yes" is the answer.

This is a pretty good bump, read all 4 pages of comedy. Any of the posters who were winning big on the sites still here? Would be interesting to hear if anyone got in super early and hit it huge all from collecting BTC from micro stakes poker lol.

i didnt win huge on these sites but i definitely played a decent chunk at what was probably 3/6-5/10 equivalent back then and win. and while im somewhat of an early adopter on crypto which has done well by me, it only matters so much back then because when something is valued at $100 its valued at $100 and you cash it in and out at that price. i never would have predicted it would have gone to 5-6k/coin that fast.

i guess you could say im doing very well right now but could have been middle eastern oil rich crushing had i just never sold a single coin i ever earned but that was never realistic at the time.

by the same logic, if bitcoin were to reach $1m in 10 years, you'd have to never trade in any btcs at their current value, which no one knows will happen nor tends to directly follow by that logic either.

I remember seeing an article about the guy that sold his Porsche for 300 coins, at the time valued at $39K (give or take). If the seller held on to them, he made out like a bandit on that Cayman S...

That was the first time I remember seeing something about bitcoins being used for an actual purchase on legitimate markets. Before then, I had only heard of them being used for the 'silk road' type of sites and purchases.
