Doyle Brunson's Poker Wisdom of a Champion is pretty good. Been a long time since I've read it but I think Ace on the River by Barry G was good too. Also, this one's pretty good iirc and this one about the Andy Beal matches is best of all

Bringing down the house it's the story of the MIT card counters. The book is about 1000000 x better then that stupid 21 movie.

Must admit I "grunched" my first response wasn't trolling.

I've also read all these books I quoted and enjoyed them all thoroughly. Dostojevsky - The Gambler is notable because Fedor wrote it in like 3 weeks so he could get the money to pay his gambling debts. There is a story in the Titanic book that Doyle met with Titanic at the end of his life and Titanic told him "I know people think AK offsuit is better than AK suited because AK offsuit can make two flushes but AK suited is a better hand" and Doyle recalls responding "Everyone's know that for decades Titanic." There's gotta be like a 100% chance Titanic was trolling Doyle, right?

This one's pretty good for comedy value, at least Doyle's NL section. I mean I guess he gets across the power of semi-bluffing but it's such a bizarre and weird manual with almost no specific advice that he was likely just trolling people with to give them deceptive advice that would get them to play worse against him without revealing any of his true strategy.

For example, "sometimes a flush draw is good enough for me to move in on a man, but what I'm really looking for is a straight draw, sometimes an inside straight draw is enough." No mention of stack depth or board texture or the fact that a combo draw of any sort is always better to semibluff than a "straight draw"

Might be the dumbest post this year. The book was light years ahead of most poker material, which there was very little at the time, and it helped me make 6 figures early in my career.
It was widely considered the Bible when it was printed and undoubtedly helped many on this site. Yes it’s outdated now but your opinion on this book shows your ignorance and arrogance.

The movie was a fictionalized version of a book that has been derided as completely fictionalized by many people (including casino reps and former leaders and members of the MIT blackjack team.) The result is a long way from the truth.

My favorite part of the movie is how they turn a 20-year-old Asian kid into a 30-year-old White movie star.

It's a close call but djz has my vote for dumbest post of the year, I agree with you though, books 40 years old and at that time, and probably up until 200's was best book out.

I have read just about every book mentioned on this thread. The few I haven't yet read are on my new reading list. Just wondering, has anyone on here ever read Pool Wars? It's pretty much all gambling stories.

Well, excuuuuuse me! I'm so sorry if I disturbed your sensibilities. I was just curious if any poker players had read a pool related book, and one with lots of gambling stories in it, which is after all the OP's original question.

If you are a pool buff you will find this interesting. *** ******* basically relays his own pool experiences. Mostly small scores.

Bet the House by Richard Roeper was an enjoyable read - he basically tries out each form of gambling and writes about it.

Thanks for cherry picking one review that was not so generous. There are dozens more you could have quoted that loved Pool Wars. Most people have said things like "They couldn't put it down and read it non stop from cover to cover." I'm proud of my book and I don't really need to plug it on here. I was merely responding to the OP's question with a question of my own, and somehow that offended you. Get over it!

Other very good pool/gambling related books include "Playing Off the Rail" by David McCumber, "Running the Table" by Jon Wertheim (Editor of Sports Illustrated), "Hustler Days" and "The Hustler and the Champ" both by R.A. Dyer, "Road Player" by Jerry Forsyth, "McGoorty" a hard to find classic by Bob Byrne and maybe the best one of all, "The Bank Shot and Other Great Robberies" (the life story of Minnesota Fats) by Tom Fox. All good reading material here by excellent authors!

One other poker book I enjoyed was "Read 'Em and Weep" by John Stravinsky. Another fascinating book about gambling is "The World's Greatest Gambling Scams" by Richard Marcus.
