There is a whole lot more that goes into how long someone is on leave...even though it is likely going to be ruled as a justified shoot, the reality is that the officer has to live with the decision that he not only GOT shot but that, in the course of defending himself, he took someone else's life. That is a lot of mental and emotional baggage that can make it difficult to return to active duty...
Sadly, there are lots of suicides that have followed such incidents. It is not unique to the law enforcement profession either. There are periodic stories about truck drivers that could not deal with the after-effects when some idiot jumper decides to put themselves in front of an 18-wheeler, leaving the driver with no time to avoid the contact. While the driver is not in any way at fault, it messes with the head. They cannot deal with the guilt/emotions/trauma and some reach a point where they take their own life.
I can only hope that LVMPD has good trauma resources to help the officer.
