Quote:
political attention to the existence of the PokerStars app was originally brought up by a politician, Australian Federal Senator Richard Di Natale, in April. Senator Di Natale called for the Apple store to ban the sale of the app, stating that it broke Australia federal law (specifically the Interactive Provisions Act).

The Senator’s political party, the Australian Greens, are influential in the current Australian minority Government, which is led by the Australian Labor Party (ALP). The ALP is currently neck and neck with the major opposition party in voting polls, meaning the support from the Greens remains crucial in the lead up to the election.

I'm one of them fwiw after Di Natale has turned out to be a moron - I normally vote Greens/Dems and preference Labor, this time Labor's going at the top and all of the minor party clowns can gtfo.

Also +1 to not making this a major issue unless legislation banning online poker is imminent, the status quo is great in Australia currently and we don't want to disturb that.

Completely disagree. The local market is at a really low point and this is because no companies are doing anymore marketing or promotions as the environment has become quite hostile.

Live tournaments numbers are down everywhere, nothing on TV anymore, the main Australian forum is dead.

If we want to get back to the glory days of 2006/7, something needs to be done. It's either a push for regulation to allow approved operators to open the market back up and pump some dollars into it, or watch it continually decline.

'Approved Operators' charging $10 rake, no thanks. Pokerstars suits me just fine, I couldn't care less if other Australians aren't playing in great numbers.

PokerStars would likely be one of the operators, and we all know they won't increase their rake like that. If other operators want to stay competitive, they'll follow suit. Pretty simple business.

you probably should because as a whole, australian punters are extremely stupid. We would have the softest poker economy there is

The rake would'nt jump to $10 per hand, thats just a stupid statement.

It would increase though, but if the rakeback/rewards were also moved in line and it was legal/advertised, then its a great thing for all Australian players.

At the moment it is extremely dead. Even the live scene is suffering. Crown has gone from running six to seven 2/5 tables a night to running 1 and maybe 2 on weekends, and theyre terrible reg filled games. Dont say its because of the rake increase, for one it wasnt a massive jump, two they've actually lowered it recently and third most of the players in those games didnt even know the pots were raked

The Australian poker economy is dead. I would rather see someone push it over the edge on the front page and flip a coin on a booming economy or our own black friday than continue on the path we are on

I am like you, I agree with a lot of The Greens policies. However, any party that is far left and socialist "moral crusaders" like The Greens, are always going to take this kind of ignorant stand towards gambling. For the sake of poker in Australia, lets hope the Greens or that bigot Nick Xenophon don't hold any balance of power.

I'm rather amused that the Greens want to crack down on online poker but legalise drug use (unless their stance has changed in recent years). A rather logically inconsistent position it would appear.

Gotta hand it to the governments all over the world, they are some straight up gangstas who don't give a flying f**k.

They can take, steal spy and do whatever they want to to us cattle and they don't even try and hide it anymore, pushing out dat totalitarianism like complete bosses imo.

Hi folks -
We think the problem of Australian players being unable to start the installed PokerStars mobile app has been resolved. Please try again and let us know if you have problems.

Regards, Lee

Wait. You can't just install apps manually on iPads?

Why the **** would anybody purchase a device where you have a central authority(Apple) telling you what you can/can not use?

NO chance this is going to hit new zeland anytime soon. Online Poker is technically illegial and poker is huge compared to NZ, because of Joe Hachem and a lot more good pros. Poker is a lot bigger due to Australia having some decent poker rooms. Online Poker is not illegial in New Zealand and there are so few online and live pros I doubt we have anything to worry about.

I'm the author of the Poker Asia Pacific article linked earlier in this thread.

Some points on the comments so far:

1) A Rudd Labor government has a small chance of legalising online poker, but the most likely outcome is the status quo: legal for us to play, not legal for Australians to be offered that gaming service.

Note this law has never been enforced since it was introduced in 2001.

An Abbott Liberal government has clearly stated it will ban online poker. A number of posters here have argued this is not a high-order issue. They are right. However, it is an easy ban to implement - online poker has no lobby group behind it, therefore it is a painless way for a conservative government to appear tough on gambling. You can imagine a set of new populist laws smashing Waterhouse and online poker, while ignoring the real source of problem gambling in Australia: the pokies (what we call our slots, for American readers). Pokies cause 80% of problem gambling in Australia, the percentage for poker is so small it does not even register on the survey.

2) The status quo in Australia - a legal grey area - is not optimal. On the positive side, we can play online poker as we wish. On the downside, we have no certainty around our rolls. As I note in that article, having ambiguity over the legality over online poker means we lose out of advertising and sponsorship. This hurts the poker media, live tournaments, and Australian professionals looking for sponsorship.

3) Andrew Wilkie actually supports legalising and regulating online poker, believe it or not.

4) Xenophon is a gormless half-wit who refuses to differentiate between games of skill and games of chance.

5) The Greens have surprised me. As an earlier poster noted, they support legalising marijuana, yet seem opposed to just about every type of gambling. However, I have not seen an official policy for them regarding online poker, so I'm not clear exactly where they stand.

6) If the Liberal Party wins the election, I recommend you reduce your current online roll to the bare minimum. As a general common sense measure, you should not have huge amounts online if you are an Australian player in any case.

The most likely outcome is the staus quo. Which is bearable. I'd put the possibility of online poker being banned in Australia within the next year at about 20 - 25%.

Cheers

Tim
