I think most people will recognise that to be a winning player with a fairly low +ROI over a biggish sample means that he's likely played too tight a tournament strategy given the very top heavy nature of prize money.
Someone hinted he's an expert at maximising comps/freebies, plus his style of play will win small, steady amounts in most low/mid stakes live cash games so you can't really knock him if he's made a decent living overall.
Possibly he's also had some massive equity spots along the way that went against him, meaning that ~250K could have been $1M.
