Did the security guard make the right decision here considering the armed robber's gun discharging was clearly a possible outcome?

When you have live streams showing hundreds of thousands on the tables then clearly security is going to be an issue.

I can see a more professional hit coming in the future to one of these bigger rooms.

The better decision would have been to just shoot the robber if the security guard was armed. If he was unarmed security then it sounds like he did the best he could. Are you suggesting he should have just let him have his way with all the customers?

At a real business the security guard would be instructed to only discharge his weapon with customers around as a last resort. At an unregulated wild west Texas card room everything might be fair game though.

If a dude with a gun out isn't an immenent threat of death or great bodily harm in your mind I don't know what is wrong with you. Chances are 10% of the room was packing and likely to fire if security didn't act first. I ain't tackling a dude with a gun, I am drawing my own gun and shooting him.

No idea why you take that personal. All I said was how a lot of big businesses (like chain stores) handle security, mainly because of liability. I also don’t think what you as a customer would do is really relevant to what the security guard is instructed to do.

Self defense law doesn't distinguish between on or off the job but you do you sheep.

Not only that, but vloggers galore going there and filming cashouts in the tens of thousands of dollars.

I don't see how something more organized could be thwarted unless they really step up security or have a system where you go through a metal detector then, only after doing so, get buzzed in.

This is what I've been thinking. Especially with rooms that have cash boxes for players to hold $$$.

I don't think there's any reasonable amount they could spend that'd truly stop a group of 3-5 armed men.

Following this thread. Every game I played in in dallas years ago had double doors with a security guard you had to get through, why are they slacking on security now. I think these incidents will get these rooms shut down and then they are out of business for good.

More proof to me that anyone who would bring lots of money to these places, completely unregulated should have their heads examined. This place Legends for example? The owner has a real shady past. Imagine coming down to play a big tournament there and you win 6 figures and have no ties to Texas. You want the cash, someone from this card room alerts his buddy in the local police, they end up pulling his rental car over and finding some BS to confiscate the cash.

My point is not only do you have to be damn careful and concerned playing high stakes in clubs like this, but also worry about the people running the place and the ability to work with the local law enforcement to steal your money.

This room is pretty damn close to the nicer area of Houston too. Might be a little too close for comfort with stories like this.

They only have 11 tables going now, usually they have around 20 at this time. Lots of reviews on Poker Atlas now not happy with the lack of good security and how easy it obviously was for someone to come into the place with a rifle.

You gotta wonder if many players might look for another place to play because of this. How ironic would it be that Legends puts 88 Social out of business and their awful security puts themselves out of business soon after.

This is someone's recent review of Legends I thought I would post, pretty much sums up this thread:



Players have been followed to be robbed.
Cars are broken in too.
Park at own risk sign was just posted at the club.
And now just yesterday someone shot up the place.
Why play and support a club that puts you at risk.
Your risking your money and now your life playing at a poker room like this.

The rooms are about 15 minutes away from anything even remotely nice. That area is mostly commercial with apartments where there is a significant risk of getting gunned down walking to your car within 5 minutes drive.

Homes are super cheap right by Legends, but you only have to go 1.5 miles north to find homes selling for $1 million+. There is a $14 million home for sale just 1.3 miles NW of the poker room as the crow files (ie a 2.3 mile 6 minute drive).

Yeah that’s Houston. You have 300k homes next door to 1.5 million dollar homes. 6 minutes away you are still surrounded by 2* apartments and 80k condo buildings so not exactly the safest area.
