Supposedly they got 1 flight complete and were in the middle of the 2nd flight when the weather was so bad they stopped the tournament and then after rescheduling over and over a decision was made to cancel the event, pay people out from day 1a according to icm while lots of people who booked flights and hotels and stuff had to suffer losses. Looks like lots of people unhappy.

I'm wondering if they really had to cancel, maybe push it back a week? Seems like a drastic outcome.

Can't figure out to edit the title but I wanted it to say it was canceled because of some flooding.

That's just life, man. It happens with every type of event in the world. Baseball games get rained out, etc. Not an issue unless it happens over and over and affects a ton of people time and time again (and the cancellation is for nefarious reasons). Dog bites man is not a story.

Sounds like more than 'just a storm' was going on...flooding to the point of evacuation is nasty stuff. Anyone who has ever been in a flood situation should be able to relate to the decision...

That and power going out. Sounds like they don't have much in the way of backup systems.

Yeah, not much they can do here imo. They LOVE that tournament, I'm sure everyone there hated the circumstances.

I actually quit a juicy online session the night before to watch the storm on my balcony. Looked and felt like the apocalypse was coming, eerily cool

One would think in this day and age big business could design and build a resort that directs storm runoff away from the electrical room.

just unfortunate.
Suffering losses is kind of non-sense, always a chance an event is canceled.

there are occasions where designs LOOK good on paper but then reality sets in...or the storm overwhelms what was planned for (saw a LOT of that during Harvey last year).

You ain't seen nothin' until you've seen an Arizona sand storm approaching! I'm talking a wall of sand 500-1,000 feet high and miles across coming right at you. I've watched one approach from a hotel room several stories up in Phoenix and it was kind of scary not knowing what was going to happen. If you're in a car you better go the other way fast!

Fortunately, the hotel windows were strong enough to withstand the blast and in about fifteen minutes it had passed over. You definitely did not want to be out on the street in that thing! I hope never to encounter that again and I was totally unaware that it could happen here in the USA. I thought that was a phenomena only seen in the Sahara or a far off desert. I was wrong!

They can't really push it back a week, as the players you referred to that booked flights, hotels, etc would have to either withdraw or fork out more money for last minute alterations to their bookings.

First some clarification to OP. Day 1a (Friday) was complete. Casino was evacuated around 2am Saturday morning. Day 1b was scheduled to start at 9am on Saturday morning, so no flights were interrupted in the middle of play. I am pretty sure the actual casino wasn't flooded, but the area where they kept their power generators (either at ground level or underground). So it was more of a loss of power issue due to flooding instead of a flooding issue.

And I got a nice advertisement from them in my ASU football season tickets:

There is also much discussion about this here: https://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/1...faq-op-758800/

There's a reason why force majeur is a valid legal reason for canceling just about anything. There's nothing that can be done about it. The world is a random place

Not putting your electrical system underground would be a start.

I've lived south of Phoenix since 1969.

1. Average rainfall is 4-8" per year
2. Summer storms are trackable and predictable for over 100 years.
3. Hold the engineering company that designed and built the resort accountable.
4. Hold the tribal board accountable for hiring them.
5. Water runs down hill, not that hard to figure out.

I'm sure they considered none of these things when building the resort. They should've reached out to you for your sage advice

If so, maybe their electrical system would not have been flooded.

Just cause it's a desert doesn't mean floods are not a problem to be considered in casino design..

Did I really have to put a "/s" at the end of my comment? They went through the worst monsoon in recorded history without this happening. https://www.azcentral.com/story/news...back/31563463/

This time was obviously a freak accident. But sure you guys are probably smarter than teams of architects and engineers.

I see, there were "teams" of architects and engineers.

Results matter. A freak accident ? Did the laws of gravity change suddenly in Phoenix, did water flow uphill ? This was not a foreseeable event ?

summer storms are not freak accidents. They occur EVERY YEAR, in the summer actually.

The Inca's that built Machu Picchu 500 years ago did it is such a way that torrential rains were diverted away from the main structures.

Maybe they should have consulted with someone from Persia. Which is now Iran, which isn't exactly a model first world country.

and I'm pretty sure the first day of engineer/architecture school covers water running downhill. Maybe they were playing poker online that day.

It has rained there before, this isn't the first monsoon season they've been open, so it wasn't an issue in the past. I'm not defending them, just pointing it out.
