Not the saddest part of the story IMO...

McManus certainly seemed to be an *******, but Positively Fifth Street was an enjoyable read (back in '04 or whenever I read it...not so sure how much re-read value it'd hold now)

I was walking back inside the Bike a few years ago after taking a break when I spotted him and walked up to say hi (had to meet the guy)

I'm like 'hey you're Ellix Powers...whats up man'

first thing he said was

'you got a cigarette ?'

I just laughed and handed him a smoke.

He seemed like he was tweaking pretty hard

Is Ellix still around the LA card rooms? Did anyone see him at the WSOP this year? He always understood the importance of making an appearance at the Rio.

Quote:
"See, I gotta make an appearance. I dont have to place in an event this year, but next year Im gonna have to be up there. See its like the superbowl, you can skip it a couple years as long as you make it back. Im like San Antonio. See back at home, my place is a dump. I walk around dressed like a bum. Out here I gotta look all nice, I gotta make an appearance."

FYI, Ellix passed away on Saturday , Sept 12 2015, in his sleep in Los Angeles, CA. He was 62-63 years old.
He leaves behind his mother and a daughter.

Say what you will, he was a character.

Here is his defining moment in the poker world.

I can't believe "he called me with jack high" is easily over a decade old. Seems like only yesterday....

Love that clip like everyone else but It's really cringe worthy watching him miss all those hands to go out and smoke. R.I.P

Because playing at that final table was the break of a lifetime for a guy who's been down and out the majority of his adult life. The easiest thing in the world would of been for him to just stay seated, play it out, and wait for the break to leave the table. Missing those hands at the final table of a LHE event(where the hands play out fast and the blinds are sky high) is giving up a disgusting amount of value. If you really needed me to explain that to you then there you go.

the first and only time i saw him irl was when i was seated next to him in a 1k wsop event in 2010. he was pretty quiet.

edit: sad to see this was bumped because of his passing. RIP.

So he probably missed a blind and a half max? Meanwhile he gets to feed his addiction +EV and put McManus and probably some others on even more tilt +EV. It's possible he actually gained some EV so gtfo nit.

Google "Positively 5th Street" to see his one and only positive contribution to the community.

Ouch, that'll leave a mark......

RIP Ellix. I played some 10-20 LHE with him at the World Series I want to say in 2006ish, back when cash LHE was still spread and played at the WSOP anyway. He only played a few hands, didn't like the feel of the game, maybe table too nitty, and left, he probably had good game selection skills. Seems like he kind of dropped off the poker world after his little ESPN cameo.
