If the passing is confirmed, maybe a Mod can add "RIP" to the thread title or something like that.

I can confirm that Ellix Powers has passed. I was called by a mutual friend last Sunday. After his run at the WSOP and the TV broadcast, I met him at Hollywood Park in late 2004.

It is a testament that we are still interested in him. A true character and rogue. One of the last of the Mohicans. In an age of hoodie wearing silent poker drones devoid of personality we bid farewell to a poker character from the old school.

Good night Mr. Powers. May you rest in peace.

Alright, I played some LHE cash with him at the WSOP a few years after his ESPN appearance. He was hilarious. Constantly trying to short buy, needling the nits at the table, etc. He took a brutal beat with class, didn't seem to tilt.

He had a diamond players card with someone else's name on it and was trying for at least 30 minutes to get the floor man to comp him cigarettes from that card, insisting it was his uncle's card. They declined.

He was a true hustler and seemed a lot smarter than I expected him to be. Clearly had a rough life, though.

Missing those hands at the final table of a LHE event(where the hands play out fast and the blinds are sky high) is giving up a disgusting amount of value. If you really needed me to explain that to you then there you go.
different game back then sonny

I played $30/$60 LHE with him in reno during the wpc in 2005....he teased me when i tried to re-peek tell him (looking back at cards on a sss board with axss) and snap-mucked. I also remember him hustling for stakes during tournament. RIP

RIP. If I could fill a table with the poker players I'd most like to sit and gamble with, he'd be on it.

I would always chat him up. He was a better player than most people think, and struggled with life as much as everyone assumed.

Him FTing the $5k LHE was no fluke, he had managed to stay off hard drugs that year according to his backer, and won him two nice scores in the runup to the WSOP. Then when his time came to shine, he didn't show up for the ESPN interview where they agreed to pay him $10,000 for his feel good story.

Unfortunately, the reason he didn't show up was drugs, and that is mostly likely responsible for his death. When not feeling the effects, Ellix was a kind, fun soul who loved people and poker. He never blamed any troubles of his on racism, even though by being black and homeless, he certainly got treated poorly often enough to drive any normal person insane.

I will miss Ellix. I will miss buying him lunch, and I will miss the smile he put on my face whenever he would trash talk...he only seemed to do it to people that I didn't like either. An uncanny reader of *******s.

RIP Ellix, you will be missed.

Mod should please change thread title to RIP Ellix Powers, since we now know what happened to him.

I played limit holdem with him at the RIO during WSOP many years ago, probably '06ish, back when limit holdem was still widely spread during WSOP. He was a nice guy, played pretty tight but aggro when playing a pot.

There was also another final table around that time where a few are since dead. I think it was the Thunder Keller table where both James Sousa and Eskimo Clark played. They both have since passed away. Watching those final tables back then were lots of fun. I seem to remember Sousa was pissed that Eskimo didn't shake his hand after he was knocked out. Then Sousa said when Eskimo wants something he is super nice to you.

Sousa had a great stretch at that table where he won about 8/11 hands while eating a shrimp cocktail - was inspired play

I also remember he bluffed his whole stack with 104 offsuit? The flop was JJ10 and Thunder had a Jack and called. But Martin de Knijff had J10 and then a 10 came on the turn and Thunder looked worried but then jumped up and celebrated when a blank hit the river. I think Matusow was cheering him on. Earlier I believe Sousa got Thunder to fold QQ when the flop was KK rag. Sousa shoved all in with 54 or something like that and Keller mucked and Sousa showed it lol.

I think it's safe to say that kind of play just doesn't happen anymore at key final tables. But it was fun to watch though.
