I don't even know where to begin with this lunacy. Clinging to relevance by using poker as an analogy for beating the coronavirus is...pretty much on brand for this woman. Amiright?

Seriously ? Prior to the pandemic there was a substantially lower chance of catching a fatal disease (a pretty negative outcome) from going to the supermarket, visiting with friends, or eating in a restaurant. Doesn't make things drastically different?

Consider "the environment related in the uncertainty" in choosing activities in which to engage; to stretch into tortured relevance of poker advice, that means "game selection".

Her nonsense on wearing a mask or not misses the point entirely. The consequences are NOT limited to the decision maker, but to everyone who might come into close proximity.

She described the decision to wear a mask as a “free roll.”

I get it that this is her one trick pony schtick, relating everything to poker to give herself relevance, but this was a crock.

Not sure why she is still relevant when it comes to poker. She hasn't done anything in poker for 9 years and her claim to fame is winning a single table Sit-n-go freeroll over 15 years ago.

What's amazing is how well she and her PR folks con publications and networks into thinking she is an authority on anything. They obviously do zero vetting on her history of failed and cheating businesses.

While I may not agree with everything Annie Duke writes, comparing her to that Mike Postle clown or insinuating that she is a poor poker player is silly. How many here have won 1/10th of what she won playing poker? (not me)

I remember seeing that tattoo in person at the 2006 wsop..she'd be leaning forward at the table and her shirt would ride up..she's probably 1 of less than 10 females in the country legitimately trying to make a living playing poker before the year 2003..her and dnegs have hated each other since about 1999..

I love the poker champion moniker. Everyone is a poker champion if you win a tournament. But if you play cash games - you will never be a champion.

she seems like the kind of person who borrows a pencil from you and immediately begins chewing on it ... then stares blankly at you before you see an idea pop into her head so you feel relieved that she at least realized what she was doing but nope the idea that popped in was to draw the #4 real big on her arm but she doesn't know pencils don't draw on skin because she's the swamp king and she's never used a pencil before

She is simply trying to maintain any relevance she has remaining. Just like I saw Liv Boree on a weather/science show last night. Trying to maintain relevance. Although the difference being that Liv actually has a background in physics (although most of her presentations were silly/annoying like sticking a firework in a bathtub to knock down a cardboard bridge to prove an earthquake could cause a bridge to collapse lol wtf) while to my knowledge , Annie Duke does not have a background in immunology, diseases, or any facet of medicine.

i know some old school guys, who give her credit and tell that she was once a good player early in her career. but not sure for how long she was a winner and what stakes she could beat.

anyway, i think that's not even the point. it's that main stream media presents her, as if she was still a winning player and/or relevant in the poker world. on top of that they completely ignore, that epic league debacle.

In fairness to Boeree, that's a pretty sizable difference.

Also, such an appearance might not be merely a means to "maintain relevance," but rather a gig that she can get because of her relatively rare combination of expertise in astrophysics and telegenic qualities. In fact, it's quite likely that her relevance – small as it may be from playing poker and owning souls on game shows – helped her get the job.

Sort of like athletes who transition to the broadcast booth: are they doing it just to stay relevant? Are they doing it because it's a job for which they are among the rare qualified candidates? Or are they doing it because their name recognition as an athlete will help draw interest? I'd say a combination of all three; they're probably interdependent factors.

I don't know the show you saw, but I've seen Boeree's YouTube channel. Her videos typically get somewhere in the range of 5K to 20K views. A few break into the mid five figures, but two have eclipsed the 100K barrier. Her most watched is a 2010 video of her playing Black Widow's "Children of Bodom," perhaps boosted because it was mentioned in a couple of guitar magazines.

Plenty of people know the elementary physics explained in this video. Fewer people are adept at explaining things in front of a camera. And even fewer look as good in a swimsuit as she does. Now, is Liv the best at any one of these three traits? Hardly. For example, Neil DeGrasse Tyson has her crushed at the first two, but I don't want to see the third. Gisele Bundchen is the stronger candidate at the third but probably thinks "mass" is just the place where her husband used to work.

Anyway, while it's quite possible Boeree's TV appearance simply served to feed some narcissistic tendencies, it's far more likely that it was the product of people – both her and the show's producers – playing to some strengths.

Okay, back to picking on Annie Duke. That never gets old to me.

I played poker with Annie Duke back in the days when bathing wasn't a high priority for her. She would sit, legs crossed so her feet were chair-seat high most times and her feet were filthy. People would actually tell her to cover her feet. Never a fan of anyone with dirty feet and not ashamed to display them in public.
