I was not being condescending. The questions were sincere. People called me names for asking them.
I'm also open to being wrong. Maybe Beale is among the best and if so, I'd be much more interested in a HU match involving MH even if it had to be at much lower limits.
Grunching to this point in the thread, but if Hagler and Hearns squared off in the ring tomorrow, I'd watch. It would be a lousy fight, yes, but I'd be in for the sheer novelty of it. Same with Ali and Foreman, although that would just get depressing. (Of course, that analogy falters because Beal and Brunson were not the Hagler-Hearns or Ali-Foreman of their time.)
If Daniel Negreanu squared off in the ring with Howard Lederer, it would be huge news. We wouldn't care where either ranks in some pantheon of prize fighters, for Chrissakes, we would enjoy the moment. Hell, I'd watch just because it would be the only time in history that NVG was universally in DNegs' corner.
But seriously...
Those who are fascinated with this game are probably those who enjoyed
The Professor, the Banker, and the Suicide King. I know that's the appeal for me; I can't confirm that with others. For many a poker fan, the events in that book are part of game's folklore.
You're not wrong for stating that neither Beal nor Brunson are the best LHE players in the world, nor are you wrong for being "genuinely interested" in the fascination. But if you were wondering why Sunday's game became newsworthy for so many poker fans, that question was asked and answered several times over on the first page of this thread.
That's why you're getting attacked. That, and 'cause some NVG types just like to attack.
