I was reading a subreddit called /r/antiMLM the other day, and I was taken aback at how many of the posts there were about essential oils. Apparently there is a booming cottage industry of pyramid schemes centered around harassing your friends and family to buy overpriced snakeoil.

Now, I had assumed that Alec simply bought some oil wholesale and bulk-ordered some cheap trinkets on Alibaba. If you must go down this road, that would be the smart way of doing it. But is it possible that he's stupid enough to have been caught up in Young Living or some such scam?

The way they speak and act is strikingly similar to Alec's online persona. They pretend to be very successful entrepreneurs with "personal brands", and speak in motivational platitudes, apparently spending way too much time watching Gary Vaynerchuck and reading The Secret. This is all a front, of course, as most of them are failing.

Many years from now, this thread will educate social scientists on how one mistake can ruin a person's reputation and career forever and ever.

Alec will be featured in anthropology textbooks under the title "the tale of the hidden chip"
