I play donkaments and have been superstitious about this, only because I heard they are bad luck and to never buy in with $50 dollar bills. Is this only in poker or all gambling? Does anyone else believe this/heard of this too?

I heard it was an Asian thing, the superstitious belief of bad luck $50 bills. I’ve never cared and in fact ask for them when cashing out.

Many years ago Doyle Brunson stated that poker players considered $50 bills bad luck. Possibly because they were afraid of confusing them with $20s. IIRC, he said that in Super System, although it may have been another book or in an interview.

I thought it was in the old days fives could be mistaken for $50 bills.

You should never deal with fifty dollar bills because you just can't be sure if someone wrote in a zero on a fiver.

Ya 50s are mushy that’s a fact.. it has to do w counting…

50 plus 20 plus 20 etc is a weird number.

So you always have to have an even number of 50s or your roll will be 430 or some weird number.

These are facts of gambling.

Wells Fargo atm only atm that gives you 50 as the standard.

Mushy bank, mushy 50s

This would also be true for $1 bills $2 bills $10 bills…

So only $20s are safe from not becoming $200! Or are they….

Maybe it was because when I first heard it I was in Vegas, but I always just assumed it was a Vegas thing.

You what now

What do you think happens when you have 20s and 10s

Why is 430 weird

Do you really think that such an effect would be strong enough that apparently all of USA live poker eschews $50s

Heard this first in casino with no poker and not in Vegas. So seems to be general casino thing.

Most places say they don’t accept bills over 20 or accept everything so 50s are just worse 100s taking up twice as much space.

There’s places outside Vegas that have this superstition too but seem centralized in certain areas.

Currency really wasn’t thought out well. Should be 1$ 5$ 20$ 100$ and 500$. 10s and 50s are kinda useless because too close to other denominations that are very frequently used

I thought it was because the 50 has a portrait of President Grant on it who was the only president to declare bankruptcy, until trump came along.

There was a NYT crossword clue the other day: “ Where $50 bills and crossing your legs may be considered bad luck” and the answer was “CASINO” and it was the first time I had ever heard it. I asked the dealers that day if they were familiar with it, and none of them were either. Must be an old thing!

You'll see some places that offer limit (lol) games with $2 and $20 chips. They don't mix well with $25 chips.

At the WSOP I noticed they always gave me $20 and $10 notes instead of $50 notes.

I’ve never seen a casino hand out a $50 note for anything now that I think of it
