Our prison system will go down as one of the biggest failures in modern history. Most inmates have serious mental illness or substance abuse issues that are the reason (directly or indirectly) they are incarcerated. Many others are innocent (plenty of examples if you want to do some research) and have lost years of their lives due to dirty cops and prosecutors.
All are in conditions that the public would protest if we saw dogs in the same condition, but the public turns a blind eye under the outdated notion that they deserve it. Research Alabama prisons and you will get an example of this. Even those who deserve to be in prison (and their are plenty) have no chance at rehabilitation.
Our prison system contributes to a high recidivism rate by design. After the inhumane treatment / conditions and the difficulty reintegrating with society many have no viable options.
I think violent crimes need to be prosecuted and worked to recall our Soros-backed prosecutor in Los Angeles (George Gascon), but those are a pretty small portion of the prison population.
