If I'm not mistaken, $50k adjusted for inflation is close to the equivalent of what $10k represented in the early 70s when the WSOP was in its infancy, so it's roughly the price of what the main event should be if they kept up with the times. Makes for an interesting field heavy on pros, with a healthy mixture of top tier pros and lower tier pros who are probably shot taking and/or staked.
Haralabob was on the fence (on twitter) about degening the 250k (when btc was at 65k+ he was, at least. heh.) and Dan Smith pointed out that the field in the 50k or 100k probably makes for a much more enjoyable experience
