He understands this. I remember in his deep run in 2015, he was basically circumventing the Jamie Gold rule and telling people what he had. "You know what they call me, Mister Cold Four Bet." In other words, "I'm not bluffing. I have a huge hand. Please just fold." I think he rated his edge as being so big that he never wanted to gamble, and was just happy to win pre-flop to reduce any possibility of a suckout. Maybe he got away from that today, or just lost composure. Maybe it was a player-specific spot.

I'm not one of those rabid DN haters, but one thing I noticed is that he almost exclusively plays mixed games in pro-heavy fields during the WSOP. Then you turn around and try to pop right into a large field NLHE donk fest. It may not be ideal preparation. The Main seems to be a very specific type of tournament that favors people who excel at navigating these rec-heavy fields, and that's honestly not a space that DN seems to have splashed around in much lately. His senses may be calibrated to a different play style.
I think this is good analysis. He doesn't really play large field NLH tournaments any more where he would come across more rec and semi-pro players. He hasn't cashed in the main event since that 2015 run and IIRC, hasn't really come close, going out on other Day 1 or Day 2 in the past 5 attempts.

I feel like Lon has never really liked poker and just kind of fell into being the main commentator for it forever.

This announcing crew is just so much worse than Nick and Ali. It really does bring down the enjoyment.

Lon and Norm should just do the commentary on the edited shows. They are great at that.

still doesn't know how to properly call the action. miss reading the board and outs, making comments that don't even jive with the narrative and play of a hand, etc., etc.

Agree with this. I love hearing nick schulman break down hands. He does a great job.

Yes. Schulman and Ali are legit funny and have great comedic timing and chemistry when together. I laughed out loud a few times last night, with Schulman grilling the length of time the chip count graphic was up and then the sea life watch party discussion with Ali.

Yet even when they go on tangents they still seem tethered to the action and can snap back into a hand analysis at any time. When Lon/Norm/Jamie go on tangents they seem completely detached from the poker and get discombobulated when trying to go back to the table action.

The Night Shift is the nut-nut team and I'm glad to see them back in the booth for the WSOP after that little hubbub a couple years ago where it seemed like ESPN put Nick on ice.

I actually really enjoy Lon and Norm on pre-recorded commentary, but I hope Ali and Nick inherit the main job eventually.

Absolutely this. WTF were Lon and Norm even doing talking about TV shows from 40 years ago constantly today? They don't even bother to call hands half the time. It's honestly embarrassing how much worst they are than Nick and Ali.

Im very interested to see how large Day 1F will be. Just how many European players actually did make the quick trek over?

Also I wonder how many will register on day 2.

It's still just a really unlucky cooler, but I don't think KK vs. AA has to be a death sentence on day one.

If he were on 30 BBs, it would of course be a totally different situation.
It doesn't but the hand played out in such a way that it is really hard to see any other outcomes. Guy opens in the cutoff to 1100. Daniel 3bets to 3000 on the BTN. The guy in the BB cold calls. Back around to the cut-off who literally just sat down so no reads and he makes it 20k. Daniel has 47k total.
