Well they all live in big houses and don't need to work for a living. So they probably have more money than you think.

It makes them happy to fantasize about people who were pumped up losing it all. Even as a broke degen, guys like E-Dog are still much bigger life winners than most. They lived life on the edge, put it all on the line many times and they lost. Better than someone who never takes any risks and works hard for someone else’s dream just to scrape by

The idea of the "poker pro" that WSOP/WPT pushed hard in the early days does shrink a little bit when you see how many of the early heroes have seemingly had trouble consistently winning at the tables. Then again, maybe that's because a lot of the people who genuinely make a living at the game are probably cash game grinders with minimal interest in slogging through huge MTT fields in hopes of a big bink.

The players who; through skill, luck, or both; happened to make big runs in early WSOP and WPT broadcasts definitely had a leg up in marketability though due to the sudden boom in interest during a very specific time window. That made them great candidates for the big sites to affiliate with.

It would be interesting to stop random people in America and ask them to name three professional poker players. I'm guessing that even in 2020 the most common names would be people who were marquee names during the peak poker boom years (i.e. Negreanu, Ivey, Hellmuth, Brunson, Hansen, Matusow). Those are probably still the most marketable and famous poker players alive.

If online poker were suddenly legalized tomorrow, it would probably be more lucrative for a site to sponsor someone like Hellmuth or Hansen than someone like Chidwick, Peters, or Foxen that nobody outside the poker scene has heard of, even if some of the older names might be net losing players.

sure but plenty of people aren't just scraping by and have way better lives than Lingrin. And plenty more would have never blown all the money he did and would be living much better lives than him if they were handed the same opportunity.
if living life on the edge for a couple of years, being set for life and completely blowing it to end up broke is supposed to be impressive i don't see it.

Taking big risks that have big potential payoffs like starting a business and ending up broke is respectable. Being set for life and just punting your money like an imbecile isn't.

I mean look at Matusow. Selling pieces getting staked begging for seats in private games grinding like crazy all wsop year in and year out in debilitating pain because he pissed all of his money away. Someone should be jealous of that? Even he will tell you it was stupid and he regrets it.

Lol cmon E-dog is your example? Regging high stakes fantasy sports leagues you can't afford and not even bothering to set a lineup isn't what most would call life winners. If by life on the edge you mean being bailed out at every turn by your friends and family until even they don't want you around then sure. Take risks on your own dime not someone else's.
