Recently I was doing some spring cleaning when I came across a magazine page I had torn out of an old poker magazine over 20 years ago. The magazine probably was Card Player but I can’t tell for sure. The page includes a full page advertisement taken out by the late Larry Flynt, owner of Hustler Magazine and Hustler Casino. The page includes a photo of Flynt and a separate picture of Donald Trump holding 2 playing cards. Trump used to use that picture in his advertisements of his card tournaments. Remember this was 2001, when Trump was just known as a cocky multi-millionaire businessman and not a politician. Even the Apprentice TV show hadn’t started yet.

The ad also includes a copy of a letter that Flynt sent Trump challenging him to a million dollar poker match. Below is how the letter appeared in the ad:
___________________________

Oct 25, 2001

Mr. Donald Trump
Trump Towers
New York, NY 10022

Dear Donald,

For the past several years, I have watched with interest your advertisements featuring your picture holding two cards, promoting card tournaments and card activity at your Atlantic City properties.

As we are major casino owners and with your reputed skills as featured with your ads in Card Player, Poker Digest and other magazines, I think it is a wonderful opportunity for us to create a head-to-head owner’s Poker Championship.

I propose that we each put up $1 million and play a head-up freeze-out until one person has all the chips. This will settle once and for all who is the best player, in East vs. West contest... Trump vs. Flynt.

The winner will donate half his winnings $500,000, to the Relief/Fund Red Cross in New York City to the benefit of the victims of the September 11th tragedy.

The game will be 7-card stud.

The game stakes can be limit or no-limit, your choice.

...We both talk a good game - it’s time now that we put up or shut up. I am throwing you the challenge. Are you man enough to meet it?

Sincerely,
Larry Flynt
_____________________________

I doubt Trump ever accepted the challenge because I can’t find anything about it on the web. I know Trump didn’t accept a challenge by the late Bob Stupak (aka The Polish Maverick) to play a game of Trump’s own board game (that was selling at the time) for a million dollars.

Anyway, I thought some people might be interested in this million dollar poker challenge. Maybe we can have more challenges like this, and the recent Polk, Negreanu, Hellmuth challenges. ’

Some of the younger viewers might not know that Flynt was shot and paralyzed from the waist down in an 1978 assassination attempt. He must have been a tough ol' bird to live to be 78.

Joan Rivers had an all-time classic moment tearing apart Duke as a result of that casting.

Without clicking the link, I can still hear two key lines from the exchange in my head:

"You're a pah-okah playa... a pah-oka playa..." (I still imitate the three syllables used to say "poker" at times)

"Poker players are the most awesome people in the world."

There was something else about poker players not having real names or something, but I don't remember the exact line.

It's already been made, it's called "The People vs. Larry Flynt". Woody Harrelson got an Oscar nomination for playing Flynt, Edward Norton of Rounders fame played Flynt's lawyer, and Courtney Love (who used to be married to Kurt Cobain played Flynt's girlfriend.

Why would you assume that, King Fish was not specific about what he thought would make a great movie. Since he wasn't specific and since Larry Flynt has been a main focus of this thread, I simply informed people who might not know that there is already a major movie out there (made 26 years ago) where Flynt is the main focus.

i was replying to you, not to king fish.
King fish said the story you shared would make a great movie.
You literally said 'its already been made' and its called the people vs larry flynt
it isnt, its a completely different story

dont get mad that your 'super interesting story' doesnt seem interesting at all, even though you kept giving cliffhangers on the forum weeks ago like you discovered some ****ing huge thing. Teenage instagram tactics

No, actually it does have some similarity considering the "People vs Larry Flynt" has a segment where Flynt pays money to buy a video that will harm the image of the FBI (a government entity) and the info I shared has Flynt offering huge money to do harm to the presidency; both are similar. In both, Flynt is paying money to do harm to people who work in government.

In this thread, I’ve contributed 5 interesting or somewhat interesting pieces of information.

1) The one million dollar poker challenge to the man who ended up being president and is still very much in the news. Probably 99% of viewers didn't know this.

2) The Polish Maverick, Bob Stupak, who has one WSOP bracelet, challenging Donald Trump to Trump’s own board game for 1 million dollars

3) Flynt offering 10 million dollars 5 years ago for info that will impeach Donald Trump, arguably the most powerful man on earth.

4) Flynt buying a video that will do harm to the FBI.

5) The info that a major movie was made about Flynt (a poker lover) 26 years ago,

On the other hand you’ve contributed no new info, but you are good at flaming.

Aren't there copyright rules about posting images out of magazines and do you want to bet $500 that Flynt paid for a full page ad challenging Trump to a poker match for one million dollars. I doubt you will.

"Extremely", lol, what a flamer.

But your interest has got me thinking that this 21 yr. old full page ad by Larry Flynt challenging Donald Trump to a million dollar poker match might be of interest to a collector of poker memorabilia or memorabilia in general.

Wow, Slugant, you are a man of far better patience than me.

EasyGo, the main subject of your thread is a $1,000,000 poker challenge. Maybe it's not where your mind went first, but it's in your title. And all but one of the replies (yours, in fact) were poker-related. Thus, it's a very fair assumption that any non-specific question in this thread most likely remained about – wait for it – the subject of the thread, i.e. a poker challenge.

Then these three posts go up, in succession:

Now there are two subjects at play: your original post, or the offer from just five years ago. The pronoun "it" most likely means either the poker challenge or the impeachment challenge as reported in that Washington Post link you yourself shared. It's probably one of the two. Not necessarily so, sure. It IS possible that "it sounds like a great movie" was referring to post #3 in this thread, despite everything else in here. But probably. When you ask "why would you assume," well, the English language is why.

FWIW, if the man Larry Flynt was the most plausible reference, King Fish would most likely have used "he." I know we live in an age where we no longer assume pronouns, but certainly someone of your age – since you think these young 2+2 whippersnappers can't possibly have heard of an award-winning movie – does not think of a person when seeing the pronoun "it."

Spoiler:
Note: in before King Fish reveals that the book The Art of the Deal was what he thought could make a great movie.
