Remembering a great person and friend, Horveech. Remembering a great person and friend, Horveech.

Dear 2+2 community,

This is being posted by myself and Hids who were both good friends of Horveech, a HS regular and user on 2p2. Horveech was often spotted playing 200z-500z and sometimes MTT’s. He also traveled often around for tournament stops in US/Europe/Latin America.

This is quite an unusual thread to be posting as we have never been in this situation before. Please bear with us if it is lacking any information.
However we please ask you to remain respectful and understanding of this whole situation.
We have asked moderators to monitor this thread and keep it clean.

On the 25th of September 2018, we lost a fellow 2+2 member, poker player and friend of many.
Horveech was an amazing friend, sadly his illness was stronger than his will to live.

In 2017 he got hospitalized and diagnosed with schizophrenia. The doctors believed his was likely triggered by his frequent consumption of highly potent weed.
We knew him during this time and all seemed normal, none of us saw this coming and only a few found out when it got serious.
Some people had their suspicions when he was acting differently and cut contact with close friends. For me personally, on a few occasions I could tell he was no longer himself. He said a couple of things that were extremely ridiculous and unrealistic. He claimed he could achieve a few impossible things. However his funny personality was a great factor in hiding the truth from everyone. Horveech was mentally strong but also stubborn. It seems like he decided to deal with this on his own as he did not disclose anything to his friends or seek help from anyone.
His personal battle with this illness continued for a year into 2018 when finally he took his own life.

This is honestly why this thread is being made. It was so unexpected to everyone and we want to create some awareness about this topic as it may affect some of you, your friends or loved ones.
Everyone that knew him, would have helped him in anyway they can.
This of course can happen to anyone, however we believe that poker players are more prone to these outcomes given we live unique lifestyle. The mixture of freedom, high stress and downswings can do a lot to someone’s mental state. Therefore it is important the community is aware of unfortunate endings like these so it could be avoided.

If ever you or someone you know is in a similar situation, please talk to someone and seek help. An unwanted awkward conversation is always better than the loss of life.

For those who knew him,you are welcome and encouraged to share any good memories or things to say. Keep in mind that his family may see this thread one day.

We please ask you to not turn this thread into a debate about any specific topic. We simply want to notify the community about the loss and to make sure he is not forgotten.

I met Horveech in 2013 or 2014 in Fort Lauderdale when we were both there for a tournament.
We were staying in the same Airbnb building along with a couple of other poker players and we all ended up going for dinner that night.

It's a bit funny how at first ,me and my friend thought Horveech and his friends angled us when we lost a flip for the bill. The next day though we realized we were just drunk and that they did nothing wrong. We spent more time with them during that trip and got to know Horveech quite well.

For the next few years that followed , I saw Horveech around many stops and we even travelled together a few times in Barcelona and Vegas. He visited my hometown a couple of times and stayed at my place. He was a great caring person and full of energy. I learned a lot from him about life and poker. He treated everyone very well and went out of his way to make people happy. Even in 2017 when he dealt with a few issues,he was a pleasure to be around. He got to know a lot of my friends , most have nothing to do with poker. Pretty sure for a couple of us ,one of the funniest moments in our lives involved him.

Not sure how else to say it , but i was destroyed mentally when i found out what happened. Many of his friends including my self , had spoken to him a few days before his death and he seemed fine. He talked about long term investments and his future plans.
I couldn't cope with the loss for a few days because I couldn't how sudden this was.
I'm much better now but know that this was hard on a few others who spent time with him recently.
If anyone who knew him wants to talk about anything , feel free to PM me or add my on skype. I know it can helpful to just chit chat and remind ourselves of all the good memories we have of him.

Gonna pretend there's internet in the afterlife..
No matter what, I will never forget you Veech. I really wish i could have helped you more. I hope you're at peace with everything now and that you're out there in space floating around like you always wanted... Thanks for all the good times and lessons you taught us.

Rest in peace dear friend.

as somebody who has grinded online poker to pay my bills for the past 11 years, i know better than most how isolating it can be and how much of a tendency one can have to withdraw/pull back socially, particularly in downswings and other times of stress. it's a fairly solitary activity/grind, and i really think that if we as poker players did a better job of networking with each other and providing emotional support, we'd all be better people for it. i'd be interested in working with anyone to make something like this happen.

jesus... absolutely ****ing tragic news. I hope his soul is at peace.

Seems incredibly unimportant now, but he was always a very tough opponent at the tables. My deepest condolences to those who were close to him.

If anyone else out there is feeling isolated or alone, please reach out to someone.

Very tragic. Played a bunch of 100/200z vs him this year. I even remember being a bit of a dick in chat to him at one point, and the reason I remember that is because he replied in an extremely nice way that made me feel bad and instantly apologize. Seemed like a great guy.

I've had this happen to an ex-partner, many years ago. Onset of schizophrenia in her early 20's, probably triggered by heavy drug use. Followed by a couple of periods of hospitalization prior to committing suicide.

It's a terrible thing. It affects everyone in their social/family circle -- and the survivors live with it their whole life.

Deepest condolences.

I met Vojtech aka horveech at an EPT Barcelona stop before living with him and a few friends in Medellin. In those short years we became good friends. We travelled and shared a lot of great memories that will never be forgotten. I'm sorry you went through what you went through alone. I wish i was there for you at the end. You'll always be remembered as a good friend of many. Rest in peace. My heartfelt condolences to the family.
