Poker pro Scott Robbins is suing Borgata for over $1 million after his jokes about suicide led to a psych evaluation and a lifetime ban from Borgata properties.

https://nypost.com/2021/07/26/pro-po...-lifetime-ban/

A shocking outcome, since jokes about suicide are usually so well received.

That is nuts. Borgata response WAY out of bounds.

But pretty optimistic forecast on his future Borgata MTT winnings

Quote:
Robbins maintains in the suit that the kibosh will cost him $85,000 per year in poker winnings over a 10-year period, plus $200,000 in sponsorships. He also wants another $200,000 for false imprisonment, interference with prospective economic gain and libel

A casino may perhaps be one of the worst places to vividly joke about suicide with staff members.

Imagine being on a plane and asking the stewardess a couple times about opening the door and jumping out, and asking if jumping from a plane door would be lethal.

Not sure why the OP and others are implying he was joking, it doesn't say that one time in the article and it's not his claim either. Some people are seriously paranoid and want to know these kinds of things even if it wouldn't matter in the end. Not to mention it's just objectively not funny and the fact he repeated it a few times makes me think he's just a nervous maybe autistic type who just HAD to know. I think it's a good idea to accomodate someone like this a lower floor if possible and/or the psych evaluation but the snap ban seems ool.

If this is who I am thinking of he is a total passive aggressive ******* who was pretty miserable to sit next to. At least until he spewed away his stack.

If he is not who I am thinking of then sry to him.... but that bracelet he wears is easy to identify.

$850k over 10 years in tourney winnings at the Borgata seems incredible optimistic. Considering he has a grand total of $0 in winnings on his Hendon Mob at the Borgata.

so I went with the bad joke thing, but you are correct. He may have only wanted the desk clerk's thoughts on his chances of surviving a leap from the 30th floor.

Yes, the opening line manipulated my perspective on the information as well.

Yea for a NYpost article it's really poorly written. The first thing you see after the title is the picture captioned
Poker pro Scott Robbins got into a jackpot with the Borgata.
So right away you know this guy has no idea about anything gambling what does he even think that's supposed to mean? lol

A good article with more details would be nice. I can't imagine making a bad joke about suicide and then agreeing to submit to a psych eval because it worried the clerk at the hotel! There has got to be more to the story.

And TPeck, being "in the jackpot" means screwing up and getting in trouble for it. Maybe not widely known, but it was used in an episode of The Wire, so not totally obscure.

It's not often someone mentions a quote from The Wire and I don't immediately know which scene they mean. Kudos lol

the first step in doing something is talking about it. My father mentioned 'going in the back yard and shooting myself' a few times...right before he did it.

Really can't imagine why the Borgata employee didn't recognize this as an obvious joke. I mean, it's not like anyone would ACTUALLY jump to their death from one of their hotel rooms, amirite?

Actually suicides happen a lot in Vegas, and probably so in Atlantic City. You just don't hear or read about them that often Why do you think most windows are sealed or too small to get out of. Joking or talking about suicide to a casino employee is like joking or talking about possibly setting a fire at Ballys (formerly the MGM Grand) where the tragic fire that killed 80 occurred.

Exactly this. Perhaps the lifetime ban was a little much, but a public company has to protect themselves. Even a 10% chance still opens you up to a lawsuit. A more reasonable resolution would have been to simply cancel his reservation.

If it's a lifetime ban why is he just applying the $85k over 10 years and not beyond?

I think I would feel worse for the guy if he was claiming he simply made a poor joke rather then admitting he was legitimately asking in terms of a fire or earthquake. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

That pic is terrifying.

I know this isn't at all the point, and rest in peace to the deceased, but how did they get out of a window at Borgata? As one of the other articles I read pointed out, they don't open and they're inch thick glass or whatever.

Most likely the same guy. He has a reputation for being a total prick. Berates players and acts like an entitled douche consistently. Now he's a victim? LMAO

Based on the guy's rep I think it's pretty safe to assume he threw gasoline on the fire and made the entire ordeal way worse for himself than it needed to be.

Yep. That is the vibe I have always gotten off this guy. Now he's a snowflake suing because "it's not fair". Grow up.

It's all about liability. The Borgata doesn't want it. They don't want to pay out a settlement to the guy's family when an eyewitness after fact goes to the family's attorney and said I overheard him ask about the window at the check-in desk. And if they paid out a settlement it sets a precedent for the next case. If you ban him for life no matter how absurd it is you no longer have any liability. The casino's law firm has this all figured out.
It's risk management. How to keep suits to minimum in every area of the casino. From employees to guests. Every possible scenario is discussed.
