Post Poll: E-reader vs Physical Book

Ok guys,

I want to know what you prefer

is it better to have a poker book on an e-reader the pros being that poker books are often cheaper that way and immediate delivery. The con being that tables can be awkward to view correctly and going backwards and forwards in the text is not the easiest and you cannot sell on the book once read.

or

is it better to have a physical book that is easy to go back and forth in as well as being re-sellable?

You decide.

I personally use the Amazon Kindle much more than I use a printed book. This may seem ironic since I've had over 3 million books printed. One of the things that I prefer the Kindle for is that it's very good for taking notes, and since I'm often reading a book for possible written review, this is quite helpful to me.

Best wishes,
Mason

I have a basic Kindle unit and do have poker books on it. I too make notes though not for publication and find it a real hassle. Perhaps, you have one of the advanced later models or you are just more nimble-fingered.

Best wishes,

Re: Poll: E-reader vs Physical Book

Overall, I prefer reading books in ebook format. However, for poker books that are in workbook format (with questions and an answer key), I sometimes prefer hardcopy as it is easy for me to highlight and navigate back and forth with notes. I see pros and cons for both but I would say it depends on the book - but mostly I like ebook better.

Re: Poll: E-reader vs Physical Book

Given a free choice, I'd prefer the paper book every time.

As a practical matter, it's easier and cheaper to get many recent books (and almost all journal articles) electronically - so whether I like it or not I read a lot on-screen.

(No difference for me whether it is poker or some other subject; prefer paper, and have several thousand volumes; use ebook when it's what is available / what I can afford / what I can take with me on the road.)

I will be going on a buying spree and be picking up a few books from 2+2 and d and b. For cheapness, I go with the Kindle but if the difference is less then 2 (and surprisingly there is for at least one book) I will get the paper edition.

Also, when I was adumbrating the reasons for or against why someone would choose an electronic book over a physical one I failed to mention that loss/theft can be a pain in the backside even if you do get a replacement for your paper copy.

Definitely my choice to have a paper book. I love the smell of ink and the rustling of pages, it's more pleasant than electronic

Re: Poll: E-reader vs Physical Book

I have been buying a lot of poker books recently. One more reason, I have come across, to buy the print version and not the ebook version is that all the beautiful, soul-pleasing, colour graphics are lost on the kindle.

Re: Poll: E-reader vs Physical Book

I have been buying a spate of books: some print, some electronic.

e-books have two further advantages that have become evident to me: ease of return and updates of the text by the author.

Re: Poll: E-reader vs Physical Book

I like physical books. How else am I supposed to show off to guests how smart I am? Books aren't about reading, they're about showing off. Also I've never used a kindle. 100% of the magic in books is contained in physically published writing.

Generally, e-reader for fiction, physical book for non-fiction. I'd definitely want a physical book if its a poker book.

Re: Poll: E-reader vs Physical Book

Have a kindle. Hate it. Used it only once for a book that was also available in hard copy, and I have to really want to read the book to get the electronic version. Way too few words per page, and no ability to flip through = teh suck. This is way worse for things like poker books with tables, etc.

I spend way too much time in front of a screen as it is. I much prefer physical books.

Re: Poll: E-reader vs Physical Book

Print for me right now, but the increasingly interactive nature of digital may switch that.

I work for a major academic publisher and some of the ebooks and collaboration tools we're building are really cool. Otherwise, we just haven't seen that shift from print to digital that was predicted years ago. Students still prefer print. With the said, it looks like the pandemic has caused a step change in switching demand from print more towards digital (both purchase and digital rentals), due to reasons of access and concerns about germs on new and second hand copies. Students are also increasingly aware of the impact on the environment from printing. It will be interesting to see if that step change sticks once we are back to normal., but I don't see us getting close to 50% digital sales any time soon.

Re: Poll: E-reader vs Physical Book

It depends on what you are reading:

E-readers are fine for fiction or popular science books.

But I think paper books are superior for anything technical where you have to refer back to other parts of the book for equations or quotes.

Also it seems that textbooks get converted horribly for the Kindle... Always seem to be full of scrambled figures, messed up / tiny equations, etc.

Books are one of the few "real" things we have left; everything is going subscription model and download - sad times.

I can see many problems with censorship, lack of real choice and general consumer oppression under the -you will own nothing - model -

Aging eyesight + adjustable font = e-books. (I like the iPad as a platform.)
