"Matchers predicted behavior should not change across the games. Instead, the behavior of the Mismatcher subjects should change, even though their payoffs do not change." As they note, this is highly counterintuitve to humans.
The scientists proposed 3 games. In the three games, the payoffs for the mismatchers did not change. If the pair of chimps picked right-left or left-right in either game, the payoff was the same. However, the payoff for the matcher varied across games. right-right and left-left paid different amounts. Intuitively, one would think that the mismatchers would not change their strategy and the matchers would change their strategy. In fact, Nash equilibrium is the opposite; mismatchers should vary the frequency in which they choose left or right, while matchers should stick to 50/50 proportion of left and right.
