RIP Darryl "Razzo" Phillips

Reported by his son on his FB page today.

Most people active today probably don't know Darryl. He was a dealer for Binions and the WSOP back in the 90's. Was one of the first people to embrace the internet as a way to promote poker.
Tough to find someone that loved the poker industry like he did.

I can remember his posts on rec.gambling.poker back in the day.

Re: Darrel RAZZO Phillips REST IN PEACE

He was the resident Kevmode on RGP and took a lot of pummeling, but he was a very nice guy.

RIP

Maybe he is dealing to Russ, Gary Carson, and John Harkness now.

Re: Darrel RAZZO Phillips REST IN PEACE

That is sad, as an old RGP guy I always enjoyed him.

A fun controversy back in the day on RGP was when Razzo faked his death, he took a lot of crap for that. Now its real.

Russ? Russ Who? If you mean Hamilton, he's not dead. Well, not physically and when he dies where he might be going they don't have dealers.

Russ Georgiev. A rafter rambler rouge gambler. One of the old school, considered cheating a skill. Claimed to be able to expose many of the Old School as cheaters. Probably would have said Hamilton was just following poker tradition.

Re: Darrel RAZZO Phillips REST IN PEACE

I 'knew' Razzo for years on RGP, met him once when I went to BARGE and found him a likable guy. Gary Carson gave up on RGP a long time back but I checked his wiki page and it has him still alive, fwiw.

RIP, Razzo.

I made a mistake. I thought I had read Gary Carson had moved to the great beyond. I apologize to anyone I offended screwing up this thread for Razzo.

Re: Darrel RAZZO Phillips REST IN PEACE

I just learned about RaZZo passing , i didn't know him personally but remember him posting for years in RGP as well. As verified here, seemed like a good-natured guy.
I though he had moved to Costa Rica..was that part of the ruse of his "previous" passing?

Re: Darrel RAZZO Phillips REST IN PEACE

I am Razzo's Son in Law. His daughter (who I am so lucky to be marrying) is in great pain. I met Razzo in Las Vegas for the first time last year in May. I talked to him about marrying his daughter Kristy and I saw so much love in that man's eyes for her. It's so unfortunate that he has passed. In his life he was a pioneer of sorts in the dawn of internet poker. He was crazy and involved. However, he sold early on and has struggled over the years. His ex-wife and two daughters survive him. I know he will watch his daughters grow and grandchildren become strong people from his home in heaven.

Re: Darrel RAZZO Phillips REST IN PEACE

Barbara Yoon has also died from what I understand.

Regarding Razzo...before the internet boom of Moneymaker, he, Mike Paulie, Napolitano, and Byron Ligget were pioneers of promoting poker on the internet. But when the boom happened, it made it appealing for big corporate entities to join the game, with all of their professional camera people, show hosts, and so on. These guys, relative amateurs in media and PR just became obsolete. But they should still be appreciated for what they tried to do.

Razzo was a very talkative and confident dealer who could be seen with a big movie camera on his shoulders during the original Carnival of Poker at the Rio. He was ahead of his time, doing so pre-internet poker boom.

Razzo tried to start a "Poker Dealers Hall of Fame" which included as its inductees Johnny Chan and Scotty Nguyen.

RIP Razzo

Checked his blogs, and none have been updated for over 3 years, so maybe you're right.

Anyone know for sure?

Re: Darrel RAZZO Phillips REST IN PEACE

Thank you for all the memories and thoughts of my father. His passing has been tough and very unexpected. It was a tragedy that we were unprepared for and are still in shock over his sudden passing.

Re: Darrel RAZZO Phillips REST IN PEACE

Sorry to hear about Razzo. Those 23-seat tourneys on IRCpoker -- some of us cut our teeth on NL Holdem there. I remember clear as day when Razzo showed up on IRC one day and mentioned this online thing called Paradise Poker. I joined up and IRCpoker slowly faded from memory after we migrated over to these new sited that offered snazzy graphic interfaced screens. A peaceful rest for you, Razzo.
