This guy and his crew had a pattern of following poker players home and robbing them or robbing their home at a future date. If you are storing $1 million in a safe at your home you might want to invest in a safe that a thief can't carry over his shoulder. Spend $2500 or a bit more on safe that weighs 500 pounds. Not saying that thieves can't find a way to haul it out of your house or break into it but at least you got a shot. This player had a good security system and police would have shown up before a 500 pound safe left the property.

The title of the thread indicates that the victim of the crime is the perpetrator and should probably be changed.

Or an even pro'ier Pro Tip:

If you have literally millions of dollars in your home, your safe should be seriously concealed and built into the structure.

If you're going to be targeted for a robbery where there are known large amounts of cash and dealing with prepared assailants, a safe is nothing but a speed bump in the era where lithium battery powered 6" angle grinders are now a thing. They can either cut it open, ir cut the bolts from the floor and wheel it out on an appliance dolly. Your only chance is having your safe stashed someplace where a burglar won't find it, like, outside on the patio, located in the ground, covered by the Tiki Bar, or something like that.

But its all moot if the issue is people knowing you have millions of dollars on hand. At that point, the best case scenario is they wait for you to be gone and try to find it. The worst case is they wait for you to come home and make you tell them where it is... and they can make you.

I've always been astonished at how lax poker players are about security. Maybe it was my upbringing in Chicago, around some hard mother****ers who would rob anyone who they knew had anything but yeah... People know you have millions in cash, you're going to be targeted. Own your home in a trust without your name and pay attention when you drive home.

Yeah, I realized that after I posted it. I guess you would have to have known about burglary to realize I was talking about the thief not the victim.

Public reports of a million in chips and cash are going to raise questions many poker players would rather not answer.

Perhaps Chad will learn not to post chip stacks / cash on IG/TW anymore?

Well it is common sense I thought?

Chad flaunted his poker lifestyle as much as anyone in the poker community, it makes him an easy target with his Twitter, Instagram and the giant Washington Post article about him.

Try not to be the next Chad Power, Matt Kirk, Johnathan Duhamel or Daniel Alaei who all got robbed for 6 figures++.

Bullshit argument.
It relies on an idealistic premise that the world is a perfect place and that our actions cannot possibly influence those who might seek to hurt us.

A woman is allowed to wear whatever clothing she wishes, but if she wants to walk around in a bikini in Roseland in Chicago at 2 in the morning, she's going to get noticed for all the wrong reasons... and if something happens to her, its not her fault, but she definitely made choices that got her noticed by the wrong people.

Same goes for flaunting shitloads of money. Your actions inspired a series of events that caused you to be victimized.

Victims often need to be blamed for making poor decisions that lead to them being victimized. Personal accountability is a thing.

Any internet lawyers wanna throw me a ballpark for how long he's gonna get for that stuff? A decade?

And Chad: Buy a bigger safe.

Actually, all live pros with a milly in cash at home: buy a bigger safe.

At least he had home security

At one time high stakes poker players, sports bettors and people involved in illegal businesses thought that 24/7 Private Vaults in Las Vegas was a good place to keep your money and valuables until it was robbed. The vault used Iris scanners which you have seen in movies like Mission Impossible. The business never had your name, signed paperwork with an "X". Many of the victims never filed police report because if they revealed they had money there it would open up a much larger can of worms with the feds and IRS. No casino box is safe as many years ago players boxes at Binion's were sealed as the IRS went on the hunt for unreported income.

Buy a BETTER safe - UL rated as follows:
RSC II: keeps a thief with power tools out for 5 min
TL-15: keeps a thief with power tools out for 15 min
TL-30: keeps a thief with power tools out for 30 min

More than that is like bank vault level protection (and cost), and you should be able to get your security there in 30min easy.

It doesn't have to be so big it can't be moved, but for the rating to count it must be bolted into a large block of concrete with the bolts protected by the safe itself.

Many big heavy safes sold as for example gun safes but with no UL rating or only UL RSC can be opened in < 5min by any tweaker with a sawzall or grinder.

In addition, you need to have a plan when someone shows up intending to torture you to get the safe open. This usually means passive and possibly active building security and a silent alarm system.

The problem for poker players is really very similar to jewelers, gun stores, etc. with large amounts of high value, portable goods they need to protect.

If someone knows you have 1 million dollars in your home and they want it it doesn’t matter what kind of safe you have. If they can’t open or carry the safe out, you are gonna be looking at home invasion.

Where did Chad get his safe from, Office Depot? I have a small 900lb safe bolted to the house foundation. The safe is completely empty and I would have gladly sold it to him and saved him this headache.

I figured all poker pros knew what constitutes a quality safe but apparently players in the upper echelons of poker don't discuss this. If Chad had stuck around in Live Low Stakes subforum he'd have seen us discuss this on multiple occasions.

Regardless, this really sucks and I hope he is somehow able to get his money back.

Is it really a good idea to keep $1 million in cash and chips in your home? Aren't there safe deposit boxes in casinos and banks? I know there might be problems with other approaches, but that seems pretty risky.

Here’s what I’d do if I didn’t have the money/chips stored in a bank or casino.

Get a decent safe and put 100K in there. Put other 900K in a very good hiding spot somewhere else in the house.

Getting a top tier safe won’t help you with home invasion scenario as they can force you to open it, torture you, or end up dead. All negative EV

But if you have 100 K to give them they won’t guess you are holding out.

However, you are misplaying something badly if people know you have large amounts of cash at home

A gang member and Career criminal breaks into your home where he suspects you have a large amount of money. He finds a safe that is big and they can’t remove it.
Which is the most likely scenario

1) he says ok we tried but the safe it to big. We are done here let’s go home.

2) the safe is to big but there is probably lots of money in it. Let’s wait for Chad to get home and make him open it.

Chad was probably lucky he had a small safe as they were getting their money one way or another.

Pretty sure most people that break into a home have the intention of getting in and out as fast as possible especially when there is a security system. LoL @ waiting around on camera.

Yeah good point but home invasion scenario could possibly entail them waiting for you outside and making you take care of security system

I know a gambler who hit a video poker jackpot years ago in Las Vegas. Someone at the casino tipped off some criminals of the player's address from the tax form. They were waiting outside his door when he got home and somehow tricked him into opening it after he arrived. They tied him up and got the initial money from the jackpot which was around $10K. They then asked him if he had any other money in the house with the threat that if they found it and he didn't disclose it he would end up dead.

So in your case if they get $100K and say the same thing and they find additional money at the minimum you take a beating or if they don't want to leave a witness you get executed. I know a lot of these guys are just junkies or second story men but every once and while you get some gang member who just don't care.
