As long as it is a prosecution run with integrity (including the decision to prosecute), by all means. No-one should be above the law.

Don't vote in polls often, but 100% yes.

Nah. Best not to duplicate the behavior approach of Trumpderps. Time will take care of their relevance and significance pretty quickly. Tick Tock!

All the best.

Against. What the country needs right now is to heal.

That would be dangerous indeed.

Both the next and smarter Trump and the next party supporting him would say 'why not try' since the Norm would then be there is no consequence in trying to steal an election.

Trump aside the need to prosecute goes way beyond him. It is now about protecting the system and defining some hard stops that others must not cross.

No, if we prosecute him he will become a martyr forever.

Bryce, I disagree with this take 100%. Would you take the same attitude for other crimes? We just let people go coz reasons and they promise not to do it again?

Criminal penalties serve the following purposes:

- Punishment
- Rehabilitation
- Deterrence

Which of the above do you think we just "let go" if he promises to be a good boy and not do it again (which won't happen anyway)?

First off there are other “ crimes”I would take the same attitude towards. One of the main things is it sets a bad precedent if we throw trump in prison . We’ve never done that before in more than 200 years. Do you really want the history books to contain the historical footnote that the only president ever prosecuted was Trump? Why not just forget about him forever on 21st of January?

Second people should know that elections have consequences. Trump said all kinds of bs about how great Kim jong in is during the primaries etc etc. I think in the future people will be more reluctant to vote for someone with an extremist agenda.

But if we prosecute a man with the support of 73 million he becomes the center point in 21st century politics not unlike Lincoln or jfk in the 19th or 20th. He doesn’t deserve to be a martyr or a legend.

I dont see how he can be rehabilitated , he’s too old. I don’t see the positives here in terms of rehabilitation, deterrence, or punishment.

Right, rehabilitation is a red herring, obviously we don't care about that.

You haven't made a particularly compelling case for why we should forgo the other two, or any case at all, really, other than it might be expedient.

I think punishment is the strongest one. What are we deterring exactly? He largely governed the way he claimed he would during his speeches. Which admittedly is hard for me to write because he lies a lot imo, but the overall vision he laid out was very similar to the way he governed. If I ran on a platform of making the purge a real thing, and I won the election, that wouldn’t really be my fault it would mostly be the countries fault. Also I don’t like the idea that Trump is some unique evil; there’s been a lot of racist war monger presidents - and he didn’t even do the war! So what are we deterring exactly? He didn’t build The departments he abused for 4 years.

I’m not 100 million billion percent sold on the idea that There isn’t a benefit to punishment. But I don’t have to prove there is a benefit to punishment since I’m not the one who is sending him to prison.

No. It'll show you can get away with anything if you're the President.

Nobody is proposing to lock him up for getting elected. He has committed plenty of crimes while in office. I'm sure someone round here has a list.

Yeah but we’ve had presidents who were pro-slavery, we’ve had presidents whove elected to genocide people, we’ve had presidents who murder people and do drugs, we’ve had all kinds of crazy presidents who we’ve extended professional courtesy to. Why this one?

I'm pretty sure that there were no other presidents who were as at odds with the zeitgeist as you make out: e.g. being pro-slavery 150 years ago != being pro-slavery today.
