I think I prefer a system where you need to argue your view and convince people. Obviously, not everyone will adhere to that and it is not some secret recipe for utopia. But for the most part, people do actually have the ability to go "oh, I hadn't considered that".

We don't need tyrants, benevolent or otherwise.
I don't see much substantive difference between a citizen pushing the button and elected representatives effectively pushing the button when they act against the wishes of their constituency for the good of the country (as they see it).
