Only people responsible enough to own one wouldn’t want one. Classic Catch-22.

I'd rather have a pitbull and not need it than need a pitbull and not have it.

You don't need a pitbull if you have a flamethrower.

Pit bulls are super problematic. People say it's not the breed it's the owner. . But it's the breed.

So many people in my life have had pit bulls including my parents. They had two females who hated each other and had to be kept separated. One would be allowed in the main part of the house at a time. While I was there once like 5 years ago protocol was breached and they both ended up in the backyard and I basically instinctively jumped in to try to prevent a fight. I gave one my arm and ended up with stitches and a massive scar on my right arm and a lesser one on my left hand.

But that's not why I think they're problematic.

Obviously there are tons of great and unproblematic pitbulls, and they aren't the most dangerous breed either.

I also think there are lots of good reasons to oppose breed specific legislation and that criminalizing dog ownership is as equally problematic as pit bulls themselves.

Flamethrower is great if the intruder happens to be in a swimming pool. If they are inside the house they are pretty terrible.

Pitbulls are a special problem. I love big strong dogs and spent a summer in my youth working for a security company that trained them but still Pitbull breeding should just stop and let the breed die off.

All dog breeds have a failure rate, meaning certain members will snap, despite the vast majority being good dogs. The issue with Pitbulls is how they snap and how the legacy of Pit fighting changed that. The problematic aspects being:

- Pit fighters do not gain advantage by signalling an attack. Other dog breeds signal an attack because unless a trained attack dog the goal is not to attack. It is to get the other to back off, submit and give space. Signaling is to see if the other dog will back down. When you are a pit fighter the fight is ALWAYS happening and signaling only gives the other advantage. So one of the most common things you will hear with Pit attacks after was there were no signs.

- As a Pit fighter it is required to Kill after you attack. Leaving the other Pit wounded and seemingly beaten does not stop it from continuing its attack and delivering a deadly attack itself even if it is dying. There are many videos, for example, of Pitbulls attacking horses and getting stomped to death but even as the dog is clearly dying it is still limping, crawling towards the horse trying to inflict its damage. Pitbull owners who would fight their dogs had what were called break sticks so that once a winner was established they could separate the dogs to prevent them killing one another and losing their investment.

- That last point is very different than almost all other dog breeds, who when they fail and bite a human are almost always doing so to establish space or to stop some action they do not like, and are not intent to kill what they just bit. It is much rarer in other dog breeds that the attack has an end goal of death whereas with Pitts it almost always does due to that Pit fighting legacy.

These reasons make Pits a unique threat even if they fail and bite less than some other breeds.

The guy sounds like a real a$$hole. No wonder he likes pitbulls.

Muzzles should be mandatory for dogs of a certain height; I know most incidents involve pitbulls and breeds that are more prone to aggressivness, but any dog of respectable height can hurt you badly. I don't know if I've been really unlucky these last 3 years but since the pandemic began I got bitten 2 times, I hope the trend ends this year.
