Now that we have had some technological advances why wouldn't you want to make a small adjustment is massively increase the number of legal immigration and reduce the illegal immigration? That way, we can pick a choose a good mix of people we think will benefit the country as a whole - we don't want 100% of new immigrants being doctors, healthcare workers, teachers or barbers. We should shoot for a mix of all.

I agree that we want all kinds of workers, but instead of doing 1% of legal immigrants for each of the top 100 occupations (2% of each of the top 50 occupations) why not import at least in part to the country's needs. We could also use other ways to determine how valuable each person would be in the US... you know like how nearly every other country does immigration.

Agreed, at least in theory. I don't think it is possible to get to 0 illegal immigrants in a full year unless you get pretty radical (one way or the other), but it is a good goal. I think vastly increasing legal immigration will reduce illegal immigration super low though.
