One of the greatest strengths of our country is the way we have chosen to be governed and how we select our leaders. Unlike much of the rest of the world, (i.e., Russia, China, Cuba, Nazi Germany to name four), we are not subject to single-party rule and the whims of a dictator. Thanks to our founding fathers, we are not subject to the wishes of a King. We are a republic, a representative form of Government where our leaders are chosen by a vote of the people. For the Office of President, we have a general election every four years where we all go to the polls and vote for the candidate we prefer. While the "candidate we prefer" is not always the candidate who gets elected, we gracefully accept the judgment and wisdom of the majority of our fellow citizens. After the people have voted, the candidate who has received the most Electoral College votes becomes our next President. Following this process, a peaceful transfer of power occurs. That is how it has worked here in the United States for over 200 years. We have been very lucky. For this representative form of Government, this democracy, we have survived far longer than the averages suggest. In terms of longevity, the United States is an outlier.

The peaceful transfer of power has been key to the survival of our country. Until January 6, 2021, there had never been an attempt to overthrow a duly elected Government, in other words a coup. (I'm not including "The Business Plot" of 1933

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Business_Plot

as although there may very well have been a plan (or a plot) to carry out a coup and remove Franklin Roosevelt from office, this plan - whatever it was - was not actually attempted or carried out.)

It's very clear, from listening to the testimony of the young lady who was working in the White House on that day, that Donald Trump was attempting no less than a violent overthrow of a duly elected Government. His "plan" was to lead a violent mob of armed supporters, seize the Capitol, and kill as many members of Congress as necessary - including his own Vice President - in order to "depose" (by force) the newly elected President thus leaving himself in power. Donald Trump, by definition, was leading an insurrection, an attempted violent overthrow of the Government. Had he succeeded, we would now be ruled by a dictator.

Trump is lucky this is the United States and not some foreign country like Russia, China, or Cuba. If he had tried to pull a stunt like this in a dictatorship, and failed, he and his supporters would not be receiving due process of law ... After the plot's failure, they would have been lined up and summarily shot. Trump is lucky he's still alive.

He wanted to lead the march but the secret service wouldn't let him.
