couldn't possibly imagine being put through this, i've been to kiev twice and absolutely love it there - your country holds a special place in my heart

So my 'nephew by marriage' (cousin technically but we use the term nephew and niece in my culture for the kids of our cousins) just got word yesterday from his Dad, who along with a handful of neighbours have now joined up with a militia unit just outside Odessa.

It has provided my nephew great comfort to hear from his father directly, the first time since he went off the grid, but also some concern as many believe Odessa is going to be the next front of attack via amphibian assault vehicles and war ships from shore and his dad is now committed to fighting with this group and staying with them.

That said, my nephew seems much more comfortable with the idea of his dad 'fighting the invaders' as part of an organized resistance, no matter the cost that might entail. I think there is more peace in that then feeling they may have just been randomly hunted down, bunkering down off grid somewhere and killed quietly out of sight.

I hate to say it, but I think the idea of 'noble sacrifice', should it come to that, is more heartening to many, and understandably so.

NATO is extremely unlikely to put airplanes in the air or boots on the ground in Ukraine, because that is not really what the coalition is for, and you don't want to rest the possibility of war between nuclear powers on soldiers and pilots operating with incomplete information and doing split-second decisions.

Is that a good call or a bad call? Who knows. On one hand you can claim it might embolden Russian aggression, on the other hand you can probably also say that a NATO action towards Russian forces is probably likely to solidify Russia behind the regime and would give Putin legitimate grounds to claim war has been declared.

This is a frustrating dilemma, but the only reason it is a frustrating dilemma is because Russia took this insane action to begin with.

Ukraine receives support, in the form of weapons, supplies and heavy sanctions towards Russia. Behind the scenes they likely receive training and intelligence.

And yes, there are sadly more countries which should reasonably fear future Russian aggression. I won't say Russia has showed its hand, because it has shown it through numerous occupations of neighboring territory for the better part of 3 decades, but it has now shown it in a way that can no longer be conveniently ignored. Countries in Europe should now finally start taking national security seriously, and hold defenses and coalitions of a type that makes Russian aggression a losing proposal.

What I will say is that people shouldn't doom-scroll the news. At the end of the day our sphere of influence is in our immediate surroundings, at the voting booths and perhaps in donations. An endless list of headlines in big types designed to scare us into clicking the article doesn't really do us much good.

The UN GA has the ability to override a P5 veto and send in peacekeepers.

I had a lot of family from kiev russian empire. I say had because the last ones died of old age very recently, but I knew them well. They saw a lot of death there. My personal advice to someone from Ukraine or Russia is to leave if you can.

Small towns of Bucha, Irpin, just 1.5 hours drive from my apartment in Kyiv have been liberated by Ukrainian army after about 1 month of russian occupation on 1-2 April revealed unimaginable crimes against humanity.

About 300 corpses of civilians, any age, women, children, many people shot with tied hands behind their backs. Raped and burned alive women, corpses of the tortured women being ran over with the tanks. This is ****ing crazy, i cant believe im witnessing all these horrors in my lifetime. What is happening in Ukraine has been officially confirmed as an act of mass genocide by the UN court.

Im now reading Timothy Snyder’s book “Bloodlands” about 1930s and the WW2 and the parallels are shocking. When Poland was torn apart by Hitler and USSR in 1939 and the genocide of Poles and Jews was happening, nobody cared. Nobody wanted to fight or risk their lives to stop the pure evil before it was too late and every large European country had to defend itself against fascists, who have been getting stronger with each month. Do you really believe that this time is going to be different? If Ukraine falls - Poland and Baltics are the next targets, and then - the rest of the Europe is.

putin is a maniac but he is very afraid of death. You can this coward hiding in his bunker for the past month, with the fresh manicure and 10k suit hiding from his own generals at the 10 meter long table, being afraid of covid or traitors. He is too scared to die to use nuke strike knowing that the answer from NATO will destroy him and his fascist country.


Today Ukraine is the only force between Europe and ****ing maniac with 1mln brainwashed fascist army.
We are not asking for NATO troops, we have enough people to fight, we are not even asking about closing the sky anymore. All we need is lethal weapons, tanks and, most important, airplanes. We need more serious economic sanctions against putin’s regime. Without it it is not possible to stop the madman and save tens or hundreds of thousands of innocent lives.
