No, we just don't think making art about racism is the same as being racist.

No. But I don’t like to watch movies with the N word. Or hear people use it. And it seems that in our society , the bad guys are often emulated.

So if a bad guy says the N word, and someone really enjoys that character, they may start using the N word as a homage to that character , or director, or actor or whatever. And those types of words lead to more violence against black people in our society.
Huh, maybe we should have the good guys use the n-word then?

When people fight they are both human. When you call someone a word that means they are less than human and they should be enslaved, I have an issue with that. And no I do not think they are similar or related.

The language leads to slavery. That’s why it’s so important. Not only that it encourages people in positions of power to be racist.
This is actually sickening to me.

One act of physical violence is far worse than a million uses of racial slurs.

And the idea that slurs used in movies is going to lead to slavery is completely ridiculous.

One of the tenets of the "new left" would seem to be that actual violence is ok and that words can be far more harmful-- such that using violence to combat words is acceptable-- but I don't think it's usually spelled out as explicitly as PW as done here.

No it’s really not. Slapping wrestling punching etc is normal. Making someone less than a human and enslaving them is not

Getting hit in the face is not that big of a deal. Systemic racism is.

Society has said that hitting is not the biggest deal in the world. It’s not even a hate crime where as you can get punished more for verbal hate crimes.

Lol at being so weak you think your temporary physical pain is a million times worse than psychological warfare

Their numbers are few (if there are any), and OP isn't one of them. Why he's still getting serious responses is beyond me.

This is not reality. If you hit someone I think it is called assault and battery and is a felony so society says this is pretty bad. Saying racial slurs to someone and only that is not a crime. Doing so while committing something like assault/battery could be ruled to be a hate crime.

On behalf of 'the left', this guy is nothing to do with us. He sometimes shows up to meetings and starts ranting about the guy next to him on the subway playing sexist games on his phone. We mostly try to ignore him, sometimes we manage to schedule meetings in secret that he doesn't know about.

That’s only if they decide to prosecute.

Are you an American arguing that fist fighting is bad? Cmon now

You mentioned physical violence in general, but fists are still bad, and I would prefer anything be said to me over being punched in the face, and I have to believe that most black people would feel that same.

Can't believe you aren't taking him seriously.

It's so obvious his acting partner had no right to call him a ******, event if it was written in the script.

She obviously should have said "I dislike you, you gay individual" while kicking him as hard as she possibly could square in the nuts.

THAT would clearly have been the morally acceptable approach.

In California at least, the F word is the same as the N word.

Well I'm Scottish and I use f.uck and C.unt as a comma so I'm really sorry but there's just no way we could have a sensible conversation with your level of sensibility and it's been shown in this thread.

Look I'm just really angry about this thread cause you've , in your own head, brandished me as a racist and I just can't have that.

You are the only one in your class and this thread that thinks the way you do but still fell entitled enough to hand out those terms to people you've never met based on a discussion in a forum

I don’t think having racist tendencies and being a racist are the same things.

Ok thats a bit better but still can't stand for it.

What % of the worlds population do you think have racist tendencies based on your views?

No idea. Prob all of the countries have skin color/hair type biased systems.

Yeh I don't have any idea either but we are on a poker forum and guesstimating % chances is most likely a thing of yours, as it is with me.

So what do you estimate it to be within 5%

Hey if you want to continue your ignoring of slightly more difficult questions in this thread feel free but I can't have it without you refuting the claims of me having racist tendencies ,as you call it, that are not based on evidence but your own mindset

What are you asking me? I told you I don’t know. I have no idea about the information needed to come to an answer for your question.

If you prefer to watch a movie where, all other things equal, you prefer the N word used instead of being ommited, then you prefer the more racist example and I think that’s a racist tendency. It certainly isn’t a non racist tendency.

It’s based off of the answers you gave me to a question. It’s not my only mindset

I'm asking you for a guesstimate based on your opinion that you have freely gave in this thread. Just based on how you feel the world is.

Again it's not a preference for slurs to be used it's a preference of mine, and I believe everyone else here apart from you, for history to be depicted accurately and not in a way to just protect overly sensitive individuals. You are very welcome to protect yourself and never watch any of these depictions.

I just will not accept being brandished in anyway racist on this subject matter as I feel it's incredibly unwarranted and as you can read everyone else here would agree with me so thats why I say it's your mindset.

I think it would more accurate to say we don’t consider a society fatally flawed because it has some amount of violence. Violence itself is certainly not a necessary aspect of a healthy society. Societies are generally trying to minimize it, not maximize it.

Not all depictions of violence are two people of equal class in a fair fight. That’s clearly not what I’ve been talking about. If one person is a slave master and is whipping someone else depicted as a slave how is this any less dehumanizing than using a slur?

I would say ideas lead to ends like slavery. Those ideas can be communicated both verbally and physically. Just imagine a silent movie mocking people with racial stereotypes. That seems pretty problematic to me despite no slurs being uttered.

Do people actually try to emulate characters?

And what about the people who aren't racist?

Do people try to emulate them? How could someone emulate a non-racist person if there weren't also racists, and what evidence is there that people emulate the racists over the non-racists?

PW, how do you feel about the n-word being used in film by black writers or directors? What about when it's said by black actors?

It’s kinda lol to say that whipping someone on TV is more damaging than saying the N word. How many people have you seen whipped like they are slaves versus how many times have you heard someone say a hard ER ?

We aren’t talking about history films. We are talking about Hollywood and popular cinema. Idc what you think is unwarranted or how you feel.

That’s their right to do so. Edit: it makes me uncomfortable when it is said with a hard R. However as a brown man it is not my place to say anything to any black people about how I think they should use the word

Hilarious that previous posters can type out that they know how everyone in a thread(and my college class) feels

Why does the number matter?

We are talking about film and I thought media as a collective so historical films are covered here

Because you’re making a ridiculous comparison between something that you will almost never see versus something you hear all the time

A) I have no problem being a hypocrite.
B) I back up almost all of my arguments with some sort of logic. A lot of the time people here like to only quote half of what I said or they will just make things up. I can’t control that.
