Scammers have stolen your punctuation. Scams flourish with email and text since it's easy to reach a large number of people for little initial investment and there is no real punishment.

I don't understand the business plan of companies who call trying to sell air duct cleaning. Those Indian call centres must cost more to run than the referrals they collect

There are some good YouTube channels that show how scam centers work where they'll hack into them and show their whole network including their cctv systems and the places are run like legitimate businesses and if they are shut down they'll just reboot in another location.

Hey all:

There is most certainly a problem in America today.

As mentioned here, there is all sorts of scam calls and scam emails going on.

I sell IT equipment online, mainly through Ebay. The amount of fraud on certain items is off the charts. Highly desired items by scammers are SSD's and processors. These things have VERY high dollar value to their weight & size. This makes it easy & relatively cheap to ship out of the country. The vast majority of IT equipment scammers are in the FSU (former Soviet Union). Of course, there are scammers for this equipment everywhere...BUT the vast majority are in the FSU.

I usually can figure these scammers out 80%+ of time, but sometimes I make a mistake.

Recently, I made TWO mistakes, as the scammers were on Ebay for a number of months, not fresh accounts. They also had a modicum of positive feedbacks.

Eventually, I managed to get my money back through Ebay's seller assurance...but it was a dumpster fire of calling in, sending in forms, and so on.

SO HERE IS WHERE THERE IS A SOCIETAL PROBLEM!

The vast majority of the scams are going to "freight forwarding" companies in Delaware. If you type in the address of the business to a search engine, you will get PAGES of sellers complaining about scams and non-sense going on at these businesses. What percentage of people who are ripped off take time to complain about it and take the time to make a listing/posting that is picked up by a search engine? 1%? 2%, 10%? I am going to guess that it is in the single digits, probably LOW single digits. These complaints are also over a time frame, a couple/few years. So this has been going on for a while.

I called up the company to alert them that they have a problem with scammers using their business. They were absolutely hostile, and not willing to give up information (even after being provided documentation and proof of the scam).

The local law enforcement is also NOT INTERESTED in dealing with this problem. The prosecuting attorney office will not return calls. The local police/sheriff department will not take or return calls. Law enforcement has to know that these companies are involved with criminal activity, but yet they won't lift a finger to do anything about it. THUS, these fraudsters get to operate with impunity, for a long period of time.

This is not a small fraud either. I was involved with just under $1,000. This business has hundreds of complaints on the internet. If only 5% of victims complain, this could be many thousands of people over time. If each complaint was a $500 fraud, this could easily be millions of dollars of stolen goods. THIS IS JUST FOR ONE BUSINESS! There are dozens, maybe even hundreds of these freight forwarding companies.

Law enforcement should be doing something about this. If laws are only enforced for some, and not others, why have rules to begin with?

When you're paying people $20/day to make 500 or so calls and selling leads for say $50/ea., you don't need a high conversion rate to attain profitability.
