Had he stopped filming we'd be sitting around speculating about what happened based on their versions of what happened. There's little doubt that would end up skewing things heavily toward her version. The dude there needs to keep filming like his life depended on it--because it potentially does. No video and there's a bunch of doubt and the chick likely floats away unaffected in any real way. That option hardly exists for the dude.

Had he stopped filming we would not be wondering anything about this and no one outside of their circles would know who any of these people are. Fwiw.

She asked him to stop filming. He didn't. At that point it becomes intimidation.

There's no expectation of privacy in a public park or outside your front door. It turns it into a confrontational encounter for sure. But he is within his rights to film.

He asked her to follow posted rules, and she didn't. Filming someone in a public park, where they have no expectation of privacy, is totally legal. If she doesn't like it, she should leave, not call the cops.

Looks like she was trying to put her dog on the leash to me. If someone carried on filming me after i asked them to stop I would be pretty pissed too.

True. Though if it did manage to get any airplay at all I'm sure the dude would've been getting the dirty end of the stick.

She has a right to be upset and so does he. She doesn't have the right to make up stuff to the police. Rflush got it right. Both of them behaved poorly. Some of it depends on what birds he was actually getting in that area at that time. A review ebird for central park shows that there were some good birds around, and I'd be rightfully pissed if some dog chased off a Black-billed cuckoo as I've only ever heard them and never seen one. In addition to plenty of other solid birds.

That's why I have a giant cane corso. Most people would've already taken the long way around well before ever getting that close

He was filming for his own legal protection and was right to do so.

Lol. Oh yeah, some poor silver crested warbler might have got a fright. Roll out the fainting couches.

People say and do irrational things when they are under stress. Apparently she apologized profusely later on. Anyway she paid the price, she lost her job and her dog. And her life is probably ruined. That makes a lot of people happy I guess.

But if he was getting migrants then it's on her to keep her dog leashed up and his anger will be justified.
So if I get 72o and it ends up being a misdeal then it's all good, but if I get aces and it ends up being a misdeal then it's OK for me to abuse the dealer?

Not commenting about this specific case btw, just your reasoning above which sounds suspect to me.

Pretty much this. The bird watcher probably was being annoying and overly punctilious, but there is no way to defend her response.

Using guns to attack people going about their own business not committing crimes in public: self-defense, above reproach.

Using a camera to document an actual crime: what a horrible person!

guns good, cameras bad. I know which I'd rather be shot by.

Oh snap, what if I have a gun with a built-in camera?

Idk. I've spent a lot of time playing live poker and I've spent even more time in parks, and I've never berated a dealer nor gotten into a confrontation with another individual at a park. And there is variance with birds just like there is variance in poker. Admittedly birds have never put me on tilt before although my racist camera (it doesn't like to focus on darker colored birds) sometimes will.
Mostly I'm just trolling here of course but it isn't every day there is a bird themed discussion so I have to enjoy it while I can--still it's a little bit of an apples to oranges comparison I think. But you might be right.

Funnily enough, "bird" over here is a slang for a female (synonym for "chick" in the US), which puts a whole different complexion on "bird watching", but that's probably a digression for a lighter-themed thread - perhaps yours.

Yeah, you're right. Obviously if it's a rare bird she deserves to lose her job, her dog and have her life ruined. I would probably call for jail time as well. That will teach her for disturbing birds. I mean how dare she not know what kind of bird he was spotting. As markksman would say, an absolutely disgusting vile human being.

You have to appreciate though that this is still spring migration--which is the more important of the migratory seasons as in fall migration many birds have lost their breeding plumage and aren't as colorful. It was enough to get my corona-terrified-friend to drive to Lake Erie with me a couple weeks ago. People take it very seriously and NYC is north enough that they are still getting good stuff.
In another couple of weeks it wouldn't even be a close call and I'd put the blame squarely on this guy for being a ninny.

It’s great that this man’s murder has given you an opportunity to get your jollies.

Murder? Not really following this but I was under the impression that everyone walked away and only jobs and dogs were lost. (And perhaps the opportunity for a life-bird).

Lol. Yes filming someone who is breaking the law is threatening to the law breaker. I did not consider that. She probably thought she might get in trouble for letting her dog off it’s leash.

That being said, people are implying that she felt physically threatened by the guy. If you are not racist, that guy filming you from 20 feet away in the park during the day is not threatening. If you are a through and through racist like this lady demonstrated herself to be, seeing an African American man threatening her life with a camera could be scary?
