Wouldn't even need to physically take back the territory either. We could probably put up a sea and air blockade for their supply line that would force any hostile force to bail when the winter kicks in. It's not the Falkland's or Crimea, it's the friggin' arctic. Possibly the most hostile environment on earth. What are they going to eat, lichens?
Sure i would agree both scenarios are within the realm of possibility.
Russia or China just setting up settlements or more likely scientific observation and testing stations. Maybe extracting some resources in remote areas they think no one is paying attention to.
Also Canada going in and forcibly removing them with military force.
I just would put the latter at less than 10:1 to the former. Resorting to force against someone who disputes your claim, and when that claim is not clear or established is a very aggressive thing to do.
It is one thing for me to say I believe that watch on your wrist is mine and quite another for me to forcible take it back on that belief when no other proof will be available.
Instead what I think is far more likely is certain Countries may just go squat on and start setting up in areas disputed and trying to force the issue to the World Court while they exert they have been there already, spent money and resources there, and for how long.
China especially, imo has a history of asserting their claims are the only ones that matter and acting on that where they do not see an equal party able to push back.
