Anyone taking a job in the US is assumed to have an in-demand skillset. As such, there's an inherent safety net if you lose that job.

Anecdote time: I just saw on realtor.ca that the semi-detached house (1500sqft) my wife and I first moved into is back on the market. We bought it back in 2002 for $215,000. Today, that same house, with next to no upgrades, is going for $950,000. This is a house that should be an 'entry level' house: if we had to pay that down payment, with the associated mortgage, there's no way we could have afforded it. At that point, taking a leap of faith and moving to another country with a lower cost of living and higher salary becomes attractive. Especially if you've got an educational background in an in-demand field.

One of my buddies has an oilfield company dealing in new technology. He has been travelling a lot to Texas as there and New Mexico are of great potential. Canada in todays current situation does not offer the same opportunities as here.
Cost of living there is so much cheaper and taxes as well lower.
As much as we look down on the USA it still can be a great place to live if your job offers health insurance Sadly Canada does not offer stability as well

canadian market OOOOWEEEEEEEEEE

Interest rates will eventually go up .
2008 USA .

People don’t just realize that isn’t the house that is going up ( it’s the same freakn house ) but the value of the money going down with such low Interest rates .
Unfortunately unless they find someone to buy at a higher price in the next 30 years , the reality will be painful soon enough .

Buying a house at those prices is so bad while the Canadian dollar keeps going up worldwide.

With the Montreal Canadians being allowed to cross the border when will JT and his team announce a concrete plan to open the CDN/USA border?

If your fully vaccinated you should be allowed to travel south with no 14 day quarantine upon your return

Such a shame that the Jets will be forced to forfeit if they win this round.

Just yanking your chain, but Canada didn't limit the lift in restrictions to one team. That said, it's looking like it will be the Canadiens in the end.

Kind of weird to link these things together, as if making a decision on a very unique situation that directly impacts 50-100 people and could come to a head as early as a few days from now somehow affects a far bigger decision involving two entire countries two weeks from now.

I'd hope we'd hear something this week, although it wouldn't shock me if it was next week. Pretty big decision with lots of moving pieces, and involving two federal governments.

Seriously dude, if Burger King has a Whopper deal you do not agree with - will you put the blame on Trudeau? You must be so tiring to people who know you in real life who have to hear you endless rants in that regard.

All the best.

Only the Leafs could blow a 3-0 lead

We all know JT is a Habs fan

What no mention of my brother or sister.

Still curious to what prediction I got wrong in 2020 ?

I am actually on a sports pick role. Got the Jets and Habs and picked the Habs again
Though Vegas winning the cup might be a stretch

As for politics I got JT next election and the GOP for the House & Senate in 2022 and I do not want any of those to happen but am a realist

All the best

Well, if Burger King does comes out with a promo that you hate then you will no doubt be sure to tell us how it is JT's fault (before or after telling your family).

I assume you are in your 50s or 60s, but you talk like a "get off my lawn" dude well into his 80s, which you cannot change at this point, and your posts generally get the respect they deserve, but if you get some happiness sharing your perspectives - well, you have that. As for your sports picks - congrats on telling us unverifiable picks you did after the result is in as well as saying you are predicting a team that is up 3-0 to win a series. Very bold on your part.

All the best.

Well I could refer you to the Sports section of this Forum under NHL if you wish to validate my picks Though I did have the Habs winning in 7 not 4

As for the guessing my age and anything else you would be wrong on many things Though some days I do agree with you on the me being an 80 year old get of my lawn guy

Employer health insurance is great until you lose the job and go on COBRA and find out that your premium was actually $1000 a month or so. Totally insane health care system in the US. Also not fun to send your kids to school and freak out every time you hear a news bulletin that it could be another mass school shooting.

I'm also curious, if Canada is becoming such a horrible place to live, why are the housing costs skyrocketing?

Canada is a great country. Though if your a resource based company the environment is not friendly to you. That is the sole reason my friend is looking to move.
All your comments are so true on health care and shootings

I can not explain the housing costs and good luck predicting a housing crash. I am still baffled that the stock markets never crashed after Covid hit

It's interesting to see how badly many Canadians are brainwashed when it comes to healthcare. It's not much different than saying employer dental/health benefits are great in Canada until you lose your job and crack a tooth or need a script filled. Plus people getting US work visas can probably find another job if required.

This is a wide ranging subject and a pretty big hot take. But ya I agree the public school system in some cities and states is not great.

Another hot take. The article never said Canada was a horrible place to live. Just that the US is becoming a lot more attractive for young professionals.

This is quite the hot take. Can you think of any ways there might be some slight differences and your comparison might not be that great?

Uh yeah, it doesn't work like that. Take it from someone who literally lived it. If you have a work visa for a specific job then the visa is tied to that job with that employer. If you lose the job you lose not only the benefits, you also lose the visa. So if you want to stay and look for a new job you have to incur the full cost of health care during that time (and you can't even get EI by the way, that's reserved for citizens and green card holders).

And if you then get the new job you don't just start work the next day. You actually have to leave the US and re-apply for a new visa at the border. Failure to do so can get you in huge trouble.

Further, having lived in both places and needed health care more than once, there's no brainwashing when it comes to the US system. It sucks hard in literally every way when compared to Canada.

I get what he is saying the cost of dental and prescriptions is very high. I had an implant and root canal all done in one month and that set me back.
Though also having 13 surgeries has me really appreciating our system

Misunderstanding. The article was about Canadians moving to the US. I was referring to young professionals and skilled labor that would immigrate, buy houses and have green cards not temp work visas.

You live in Alberta? Alberta does have amazing healthcare, won't argue that. But many places in Canada it's impossible to even get a family Dr. and the systems are terrible, ex: Atlantic Canada.
