The left wing local news describes it as an occupation. The "rebels" have taken control of 6 blocks, have given a list of demands to the city, and say they aren't giving the territory back until their demands are met. That is pretty much textbook occupation.

Needless to say the NYT does a very poor job of describing what happened, clearly because they want people to sympathize with the "rebels," so they euphemise what is going on.

The city and people of Seattle seem pretty ok with the CHAZ zone and protests. It isn't our job to get outraged for them. I am ok enjoying the show and letting things play out. If nothing else we will get a dress rehearsal for how these things might play out down the line in places we actually care about.

No they have seized an area of Seattle and the businesses that fall into that area are under their control. They have a list of demands that must be met.
How would you feel if you were the owner of that said small business? You are forced to abandon it and can not call the police. As well some of your people are walking around with loaded guns.
