I disagree in terms of you framing this all in terms of personal wants or hedonism.
I do think it is entirely possible to take a dispassionate logic approach to questions where you may offer up a view or solution but truly do not care if it is followed or what the outcome is. You have no dog in the fight and no connection to the outcome but you can make an assessment and take or offer an action.
