I think it's combining both: it's collective punishment, and it's done to appease the easily-outraged-if-you-don't-do-this-thing-we're-all-doing. The oppressive force that mainstream society enacts on those who step out of bounds... it's an incredible thing.

I don't follow sports much, and I didn't realize that anyone was considered to 'represent' their country in individual sports competitions (outside of the Olympics) like Wimbledon.

I don't think Russian athletes should be prevented from competing in these events, and the obvious way to handle things is to have no official recognition of what country anyone lives in. This is an event where professionals compete for money, it's not a patriotic enterprise.

Just ban the flag or anthem instead of preventing the players to join .

Tho if an association been caught of doping like most of their players then I support a ban of the athletes .

Perfectly reasonable take, shockingly enough.

(Although I know your true preference would be to eliminate sports altogether)

Actually I have no beef against non-violent individual sports. There aren't many that qualify, but tennis is one of the few.

Oh, they also have to not take public space away from the public. F those marathons that block me from getting where I want to go.

I never knew shaking hands was considered a sport. Maybe I'm more athletic than I thought - I'm pretty good at that.

The Saudi investments in to sports washing via football aka soccer is pretty wild

More so than the Chinese efforts a few years ago, this seems like it might actually herald the beginning of the end for enjoyable elite football.

WTA released a statement on the Prague open

https://tennis-infinity.com/wta/wta-...om-prague-open
The WTA emphatically condemns the war in Ukraine and the reprehensible actions of the Russian government. The WTA also continues to support the Tour’s Ukrainian athletes – as well as all WTA athletes – who face immense challenges as professional athletes while many of their loved ones and their country face attacks from Russia.

Individual WTA players whose nationality is Russian/Belarusian continue to compete on the Tour on a neutral basis. Despite their neutrality, some WTA players are being denied by Czech government authorities the ability to compete at the WTA 250 event scheduled to be held in Prague next week.

WTA rules state that all players must be allowed to compete on the WTA based solely on merit, without discrimination. We will continue to review the situation as we factor important considerations around these complex geopolitical issues.
So basically: "we support all of our players but aren't going to do **** to help them".

What they ought to do is take their events away from them for next year

I thought this was interesting. Basically every PAC-12 school except Oregon State and Washington State have announced their intention to leave the PAC-12 for other conferences, but once you give notice of that, per the bylaws of the PAC-12, you lose your seat on the board. So now only those two schools that haven't announced they're leaving have control over the PAC-12, and should therefore be able to prevent the others from leaving....so it's going to the courts-- but the whole thing is a mess and really unfortunate.

My understanding is this isn't what is actually going on. No one thinks any legal technicality is going to stop the impending dissolution of the conference. It is more about figuring out all the financial issues moving forward. What could happen is that the 2 remaining schools could use this legal leverage to force the leaving schools to arbitrate and leave them a lot more money than they otherwise would have gotten.

As far as the schools in question, I imagine that Oregon State and Washington State could be absorbed into the Big West without any major issues.

As long as we are on the topic of college athletics, putting $80M in guaranteed money at risk by putting yourself in a situation where you can be credibly accused of sexual abuse by a sexual abuse activist has to be pretty high up on the list of bad decision making.

Higher up on the list of bad decision making is forcing yourself sexually on someone in front of cameras showing an event to the entire world, live.

And on an even more basic level, "keep your dick in your pants when you are taking photos or doing video calls" seems like common sense advice that should be easy to follow, regardless of whether you are Brett Favre, Jeffrey Tobin, the MSU football coach, or a random guy in the street.
