Quick 4-0 drubbing from lagtight, he wasn't kidding.

And he got me down to below 1400 as promised.

(That's rapid rating anyway, blitz has been ~1300 for ages )

I've stopped playing 3/2 completely and sticking with 5/5 and seeing my blitz rating rise fairly nicely with the increased time. And playing some 2/1 and 1/1 and those games are like crack. But bullet is still a disaster and I hope to crack 1000 there.

Back in 1999-2002 or so I was completely addicted to 1/0 games on yahoo chess and their ladders.

I had great cable connection which was 95% of my advantage.

If I stay on schedule, I'll be sick again in about two weeks, so you can gain back all your lost points then.

d2_e4 exacted his revenge this morning by beating me two out of four games. White won every game.

Good games. The ones I won I sacrificed a knight for two pawns in one and a rook for a knight in another, which makes me happy. Another one was a bit unclear who was winning, but then I blundered a queen, so that was a little oopsie.

Also, I played a nice tactic to trap lagtight's queen and he had to give it up to avoid getting checkmated in one of the ones I won, might post that one.

By all means, humiliate an old man by posting his getting his queen trapped by a youngster like yourself.

Seriously, both tactics were very nice. Good job, d2_e4!

I will exact my revenge next time!

No humiliation intended, just happy when I take a game from an OG.

From what I calculated in game (and I haven't reviewed since), queen captures knight was forced otherwise you lose the queen for less or get checkmated.

Cool thread in NVG right now, in case anyone missed it:

Cliffs: Timex mooted the idea of taking 10:1 to become a GM in his lifetime. Looks like the bet won't happen, but some interesting discussion about how viable this is.

Seems like a daunting task. Even if we ignore a discussion about potential, we're still talking going from "dedicated pursuit" to "single-mindedly prioritizing one thing for years on end".

Some posters who have pretty high ratings and tournament experience have weighed in on that thread, I think the consensus is that it's very very unlikely. I found the whole thread to be an interesting & informative read.

I think that it is incredibly unlikely. I suspect it would be a few orders of magnitude more difficult than his previous prop bet that he make 90/100 free throws.

Anyone who is a 70% free throw shooter in game conditions is probably better than even odds to make 90 out of 100 during a practice session in a gym.

I have a fairly high degree of confidence that I could train for a couple of months and make 90 out of 100 free throws in a gym.

From reading the free throw thread it seems that others were giving him much less than 50/50, but he won, so meh. I think you're definitely right re: chess though, that may well require some innate talents which simply can't be acquired through practice, especially beyond a certain age.

ETA: Also, I guess you could be a 75% average shooter and luckbox a run of 90 out of 100 (not sure what the probability of that is, but he did have unlimited attempts). No variance in chess.

I came across this statement and had to calculate - I get a very small chance - like 1/7000 for a 75% shooter to make at least 90 in 100 tries.

Taking those numbers at face value, that actually seems like a good bet for a 75% shooter then, if he has unlimited tries, ~200 days, and he could restart an attempt any time, no? It's 35 attempts a day on average, including do-overs. What's that, a couple of hours a day in the gym? Not a bad deal to be favourite to win 6-7 figs, especially if you like doing free throws anyway.

and if he does 7000 attempts, he's about 63% favorite to get there

If you take ten seconds per shot, average 50 shots per attempt (which is probably on the low side if you are continuing until 90/100 is mathematically impossible), and make 35 attempts per day, that's closer to five hours per day.

To put all this in perspective, the most free throws ever made in a row is 5,221.

I'm sure that most elite shooters in the NBA have had stretches in practice whether they made several hundred free throws in a row.

I was thinking he would restart most attempts around shots 15-25. Seems suboptimal continuing till it's mathematically impossible if you've missed more than "on pace" misses early on, right?

Would be interested if there were any stats compiled on how many shots before he restarted on average, probably not I guess.

I mean, I think quite a few high stakes gamblers took the other side. Are they all basically free throw prop betting fish if it's as much of a lock as you say?
