US students Finnegan Lee Elder and Gabriel Christian Natale-Hjorth found guilty of murdering Carabinieri officer Mario Cerciello Rega, both sentenced to life imprisonment.

However this is merely a provisional conviction as both have the automatic right to request two appeals. The first appeal, called a second level appeal (after first instance trial) will essentially be a rehash of the trial with a jury. Second appeal will be to the SC which is supposed to view cases on law points only, although they've deviated from this when it suits them to.
So, plenty of time for a potential acquittal and the case possibly won't be actually finalised for another 4-6 years.
Lucky they didn't murder a cop in America or any other country where the conviction is finalised after trial.
