Never seen it (or even heard of it), sorry. Just looked it up, is that Rigsby out of Rising Damp? That was actually pretty funny as far as the oldies go!

Yes that's him. Tragedy that you missed it - probably dated and the remake was awful. Anyway I wont insult you with Fawlty Towers.

In case anyone encounters any daft conspiracy theories about the Beirut disaster, it appears to have been an accidental explosion of ammonium nitrate following a warehouse fire.

His party conference speech as Alan B'stard in The New Statesman was kind of prophetic. (Except that Boris Johnson isn't as good-looking.)

Actually, I thought The New Statesman was pretty good. It's not one of his typical characters/performances, though. He also wasn't too bad as Flashheart in Blackadder.

@Chez - obvs Fawlty Towers is one of the GOATs. Up there with Blackadder which is the undisputed GOAT.

On tech monopoly and Republicans

Quote:
The GOP Bargain

The combination of the Republicans’ focus on the political aspects of antitrust and the tendency of the Democrats to see antitrust crimes even in normal business proceedings produced what was, I think, the most obvious political takeaway for tech companies: the Democrats have made up their minds (and tech is guilty), while the Republicans are willing to cut a deal.

The outline of that deal could not have been more obvious: Republicans are fine with the consumer welfare standard (which, as I noted back in 2016, inherently favors Aggregators) and tech’s business practices, as long as tech companies don’t “censor”; the alternating format of Congressional hearings placed these demands in direct contrast to Democratic assumptions of guilt. To put it in explicit terms: “We, Republicans, are your friends in Washington, but if you want us to defend you from the Democrats, you need to stop censoring conservatives.”

Again, it doesn’t matter that conservative websites tend to do particularly well on social media, or that the destruction of the media business model helped lay the groundwork for President Trump’s rise; Republicans expect that tech companies — by which they mostly mean Google and Facebook (and Twitter) — err on the side of not censoring or checking conservative content if they want help in Washington, because that help is not coming from the Democrats.

There's a very obscure reference to my dad in the New Statesman. I cant reveal what it is. I met Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran once but sadly not Rik Mayall.

Jeez, the phone footage from Beirut is startling. Seldom seen the like of it. (And no, it wasn't an Israeli 'thermobaric weapon'.)

Actually, can a mod be banned? Can a mod ban himself? I was playing with security in a system where I was an admin once and managed to lock myself out of it.

These are the deep philosophical questions that keep me up at night.

Arizona:

Former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio:

All the votes aren't counted yet, but Joe Arpaio is in a dead heat
(<200 vote separation) for his old job.

It's gonna take a few days, possibly weeks to declare a winner in this one.

Racism and hatred is still strong in Maricopa County.

Roy Moore (Alabama) could learn a few things from Joe.

Preference for Amount of Time Police Spend in Your Area

Would you rather the police spend more time, the same amount of time or less time as they currently spend in your area?

More time Same amount of time Less time

Black Americans. 20 61 19
White Americans 17 71 12
Hispanic Americans 24 59 17
Asian Americans 9 63 28
U.S. adults 19 67 14
GALLUP PANEL, JUNE 23-JULY 6, 2020

--The above is a copy-paste of a recent Gallup poll. It is very interesting. I am pretty sure if you just watched CNN and read WaPo you would think the majority of Americans want police to be vastly defunded and a much lower police presence. However, the truth is that it appears that the people who actually want this are a very small minority, whose voices are being amplified by media, social media and their aggressive use of cancel/silence tactics.

I fear we are going to all look back in a few years and wonder how such disastrous policy changes were driven by such a small minority of people calling for them, and everyone else too terrified to speak out against them.

kelhus vile breathing a sigh of relief to learn that the boogeyman dystopia he saw on right-wing derposphere propaganda sites, where law enforcement is forced by overwhelming public opinion to restructure into an institution that serves the people, might not be real.

yeah, no

the underwhelming - for your situation, for you! - public opinion doesn't bode well for your kin's desire to re-imagine society.

As a rule of thumb, perps want less police presence while victims want more police presence.

Edit: If I was a criminal, I'd be a big fan of defunding the police.

Isn't MAGA supposed to be about changing society?

I don't care if it is. It's as futile as the left's approach

or maybe there isn't a futility to change, but to perceptible improvement

you stand a chance at changing some shite tangibly for the worse

The entire MAGA sales pitch is based on boomer nostalgia for the era they grew up in--only instead of just implementing/building on what was already there they're trying to sell a completely different set of variables to try to(if you actually believe that's the real goal ) make it happen. Sounds like pie-in-the-sky to me I don't know.
