It's not that most right wingers are stupid; it's that most stupid people are right wingers It's not that most right wingers are stupid; it's that most stupid people are right wingers

The title of the thread is paraphrasing this quote:

My opinion based on the small sample size of right wingers I have met in real life and on the internet, the quote is certainly true. On this forum, posters representing right wing views tend to struggle to communicate their ideas coherently, make basic spelling and grammatical errors, ignore logical arguments and counterpoints, refuse to accept scientific and factual evidence, and refuse to change their views when proven wrong.

I have not been active in political discussions very long - since 2016, to be precise, the reason for that specific year being hopefully self-evident. As such, I have only been exposed to the present breed of right wingers, who in my view fit the above description. Note that I am not talking about those moderately right of centre, I am talking about Trump/GOP supporters, and not-a-Trumpers who always magically side with Trump/GOP anyway. It seems to me that those who still self-identify as right wingers in the US are nothing but trolls, science deniers, conspiracy theorists, religious fanatics, or bigots.

So, that is my thesis - the modern right winger in the US is either some sort of -ist, a dumbass, or both. Change my mind.

That is not a post that presents a position that would ever experience a mind change.

I think this is basically true. The average conservative is no dumber than the average liberal. But if you pick a random skill based group, like people who could pass a Logic 101 final exam in college with no prep, which is probably only 2% or so of the population, you'll find Trump supporters massively under under represented. This will be true for all sorts of random skills that require some minimum, but that huge, level of intelligence that significant fractions of the population can do.

Are any of you guys named Dunning & Kruger? You really seem to be having an effect.

Based on my experience and admittedly limited sample size, I strongly disagree with that statement.

OP, good topic

are the 12k people who show up at a trump rally (and don't acknowledge he's a mentally deranged idiot) conservatives and/or right wing? or are they something else?

not a fan of the tea party, but not sure the people who started that have that much in common with supporters at a trump rally

definitely education level correlates very well to red/blue states and trump loved/hated states......... but all kinds of conservative economists are amongst the smartest people in the world. and i'd say most economists are relatively conservative.

the bill gates conspiracy and anti-vax crowd is absurd.......... is the anti-vax only conservative though? the bill gates too?

clinton death squad stuff is moronic too...... and i dislike bill/hillary very much

here's a question:

are 80% of white males in some states deplorable?......... it pains me to think about it.

conservative (deliberate small c) minds like the past. The past was more ignorant and less tolerant hence their beliefs are more ignorant and less tolerant.
You have minds that like the past and its supposed simplicity on both sides of the political spectrum though.

The number of conservatives and liberals is so large that it's basically impossible for their average group intelligence to be all that different from the average intelligence of the total population.

Well if we accept the premise that "most stupid people are conservative", are we then saying that this is counterbalanced by a small number of brilliant conservatives to bring the averages back up to par?

This is true. Also, I don't think "People in group X are stupid" is likely to ever be a very great thread, so I'm closing this one.
