Kelhus is right. The media, and especially the financial media, loved uber for all the wrong reasons and fell for the corporate spin because its the easy this to do it.

Happened with WeWork and all these other "startups" that combine regulatory arbitrage, insanely good PR, and some tech/data spin.

Very few good financial analysts would ever work for the financial media. The pay offs are so much smaller than in a mega investment corp. The media just repeat the pre-made corporate PR spin as it involves no critical thought.

By the way Lyft has ceased operations in California.

I would argue if you can’t afford to treat your employees like employees then your business is not viable.

I know Lyft hopes this will put pressure on California to change but it will not. Uber and Lyft have never passed any reasonableness test that their drivers should be independent contractors.

The reality is ubiquitous widespread ride share services are likely to thin out or even disappear in parts of the US and the world. It is unlikely Uber or Lyft can survive without operating in California or New York, but we shall see.

I am a fan of the ride share concept but there is not a viable business model, at least in the US.

I feel bad for all those employees who have to work 20 hours a day just to get enough rides, so they can qualify for enough rides in the future while making little to no money. I feel bad because their desperation is being exploited by ride share services who can get bent.

Lyft was granted a temporary stay, so they're back online.

Yeah uber too I guess. I don’t have an issue with the stay while the appeals process. Although I would be a bit surprised if the appeals overturn things.

Good stuff from the Convention!

it's comforting to feel the connection and know I'm not too far gone and jaded, a good portion of my content here recently notwithstanding

better angels, baby!

I think they're just trying to run out the clock until November and praying that their ballot initiative wins. I hope it doesn't.

I would be surprised if it were successful in California but it is a mixed bag as ride sharing is a great value for consumers at the moment. But California has to be the state to most likely reject those arguments and side with workers.

I don’t know if this issue breaks directly down partisan lines or not. If it does it has no shot.

Maybe there should be a financial media conglomerate run by a panel of state-selected civil service officials (each party gets to pick half of the ostensibly nonpartisan officials).
