Several outer media outlets reported a similar story, and they did not just point to the NYT story, so the issue itself seems more than legit enough.

The site in the OP is some sort of site that likely posts news articles that are automatically stolen from other sites using some sort of filter.

This could be (amongst others):
- ad revenue scam, earning revenue from ads based on work other than your own
- domain name scam, (bumping the sites in search engine rankings before selling)
- disinformation, to drop the odd active disinformation alongside real stories or build a site in search rankings that will later be used for disinformation
- someone messing around
- for collecting information about visitors
